''The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant'' () is a 1972 West German Psychological fiction, psychological romantic drama film written and directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, based on his play of the same name. Rainer Werner Fassbinder (; 31 May 1945 – 10 June 1982), sometimes credited as R. W. Fassbinder, was a German filmmaker, dramatist and actor. He is widely regarded as one of the major figures and catalysts of the New German Cinema movement. He directed over 40 films that span a variety of genres; frequently his work blends elements of Melodrama film, Hollywood melodrama with social criticism and avant-garde techniques. New German Cinema () is a period in Cinema of Germany, West German cinema which lasted from 1962 to 1982, in which a new generation of directors emerged who, working with low budgets, and influenced by the French New Wave and Italian Neorealism, gained notice by producing a number of "small" motion pictures that caught the attention of Art film, art house audiences. Peter Strickland is a British film director and screenwriter. He is best known for his films ''Berberian Sound Studio'' (2012), ''The Duke of Burgundy'' (2014) and ''In Fabric'' (2018).
