Wallace Worsley
Wallace Ashley Worsley (December 8, 1878 – March 26, 1944) was an American stage actor who became a film actor and film director during the Silent film, silent era. Over the course of his career, Worsley directed 29 films and acted in 7. He directed several movies starring Lon Chaney Sr., and his professional relationship with the actor was the best Chaney had, second to his partnership with Tod Browning. ''The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923 film), The Hunchback of Notre Dame'' (1923) is one of his better-known works, along with ''The Penalty (1920 film), The Penalty'' (1920). Worsley's 1922 horror film ''A Blind Bargain'' with Chaney is one of the more sought after lost films. Acting In April 1901, Worsely appeared at the Empire Theatre (41st Street) as Lt. Alfred Hollingsworth was an American actor during the silent film era. He was in dozens of films from 1911 until 1925. He also directed four short films in 1916. '' Hell's Hinges'' has been described as a classic and Hollingsworth earned plaudits for his role in it. In 1908, he wrote ''Mills of the Gods'', a five act drama. He also wrote a play called Crisis in 1919. In 1922, he copyrighted ''Prodigal Son'', a travesty in three acts. He passed away at age 52 on June 20, 1926 at Windsor Hospital in Glendale, California. Irene Frances Rich ( Luther; October 13, 1891 – April 22, 1988) was an American actress who worked in both silent films, talkies, and radio. Early life Rich was born in Buffalo, New York. At age 17, she wed Elvo Elcourt Deffenbaugh at All Saints' Cathedral in Spokane, Washington on February 17, 1909, after her parents talked about sending her to boarding school. The couple had one child, born Irene Frances Luther Deffenbaugh, who later adopted her stepfather's surname and was a stage and film actress in the 1930s known as Frances Rich before becoming a noted sculptor. Elvo Deffenbaugh was a salesman who traveled a lot. The young family moved to the Bay Area of San Francisco, where the marriage ended after two years.
