Species According to FishBase, there are currently seven recognized species in this genus. Another species recognized as ''Systomus endecanalis'' by FishBase is placed in the genus ''Desmopuntius'' by Catalog of Fishes, following a Taxonomy (biology), taxonomic review by Maurice Kottelat in 2013.Kottelat, M. Six-banded Tiger Barb
The six-banded tiger barb (''Desmopuntius hexazona'') is a Southeast Asian species of cyprinid fish native to Blackwater river, blackwater streams, peat swamps and other freshwater habitats with little movement in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo.Maurice Kottelat, Kottelat, M. (2013). The Fishes of the Inland Waters of Southeast Asia: A Catalogue and Core Bibliography of the Fishes Known to Occur in Freshwaters, Mangroves and Estuaries. Although there are reports from the Mekong basin, this is generally consider to be outside the range of the genus ''Desmopuntius''. ''D. hexazona'' has often been confused—especially in the aquarium trade—with the less widespread, closely related ''Fiveband barb, D. pentazona'', which is similar except that it has a black spot at the rear base of its dorsal fin (something that ''D. hexazona'' lacks).Collins, R.; K.F ...

Max Carl Wilhelm Weber
Max Carl Wilhelm Weber van Bosse or Max Wilhelm Carl Weber (5 December 1852 – 7 February 1937) was a German- Dutch zoologist and biogeographer. Weber studied at the University of Bonn, then at the Humboldt University in Berlin with the zoologist Eduard Carl von Martens (1831–1904). He obtained his doctorate in 1877. His studies, along with others, led to a series of alternative lines to be proposed to delimit two major biogeographic realms, the Australasian realm and the Indomalayan realm. These lines were based on the fauna and flora in general, including the mammalian fauna. Later, Pelseneer p ...
