Desmond FitzGerald (politician)
Desmond FitzGerald (born Thomas Joseph FitzGerald;13 February 1888 – 9 April 1947) was an Irish revolutionary, politician, and poet, known for his role in the Irish independence movement and for his ministerial roles in Irish governments; he was Director of Publicity from 1919 to 1921, Minister for Publicity from 1921 to 1922, Minister for External Affairs from 1922 to 1927 and finally Minister for Defence from 1927 to 1932. Born in London to an Irish family, FitzGerald moved to Paris in his early twenties, where he became involved in the Imagist group of poets. In 1913, FitzGerald returned to Ireland and the next year became active in the Irish Volunteers, a paramilitary organisation that sought Irish independence from Britain. FitzGerald partook in the Easter Rising of 1916 in Dublin and was subsequently imprisoned for two years by the British. Desmond FitzGerald (5 November 1911 – 14 January 1987) was an Irish people, Irish architect. His most notable work is the original Dublin Airport terminal building. Early life and family Desmond FitzGerald was born in Saint-Jean-du-Doigt, Brittany, France on 5 November 1911. His parents were Mabel McConnell Fitzgerald, Mabel (née McConnell) and politician and writer, Desmond FitzGerald (politician), Desmond FitzGerald. He was the eldest of four brothers, Pierce (1914–1986), Fergus (1920–1983) and Garret FitzGerald, Garret (1926–2011). The family moved often once they returned to Ireland, resulting in FitzGerald attending numerous primary schools such as Scoil Bhríghde and Fr John Sweetman (priest), John Sweetman's school in Wexford. Desmond Fitzgerald (professor)
Desmond Fitzgerald (born 30 October 1953) is an Irish medical doctor and academic leader. On 6 October 2016, Fitzgerald was announced as the president-elect of the University of Limerick. He took up this role in early 2017, becoming the fifth President. He resigned in May 2020 for "personal health concerns" citing the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to this, Fitzgerald held the positions of vice president for health affairs with University College Dublin and chief academic officer at Ireland East Hospital Group from 2015 to 2016. Early life and education Fitzgerald was born on 30 October 1953 to Maureen O’Donovan from Limerick and Thomas Joseph Fitzgerald from Belfast. Fitzgerald attended Oatlands College, Stillorgan, Dublin.
