Dervish
Dervish, Darvesh, or Darwīsh (from ) in Islam can refer broadly to members of a Sufi fraternity (''tariqah''), or more narrowly to a religious mendicant, who chose or accepted material poverty. The latter usage is found particularly in Persian and Turkish (''derviş'') as well as in Tamazight (''Aderwic''), corresponding to the Arabic term '' faqīr''. Their focus is on the universal values of love and service, deserting the illusions of ego (''nafs'') to reach God. In most Sufi orders, a dervish is known to practice ''dhikr'' through physical exertions or religious practices to attain the ecstatic trance to reach God. Their most popular practice is Sama, which is associated with the 13th-century mystic Rumi. In folklore and with adherents of Sufism, dervishes are often credited with the ability to perform miracles and ascribed supernatural powers. Yu Darvish
, more commonly known as Yu Darvish (ダルビッシュ 有), is a Japanese professional baseball pitcher for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Texas Rangers (baseball), Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Chicago Cubs, and in Nippon Professional Baseball for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. He also pitched for Japan national baseball team, Japan in several international tournaments, including the Baseball at the 2008 Summer Olympics, 2008 Olympics, 2009 World Baseball Classic (WBC) and 2023 WBC. Darwish
Darwish and Darvish (and in French more prominently Darwich and Darwiche) are alternate transliterations of the Persian word "dervish", used in , referring to a Sufi aspirant. There is no v sound in most Modern Arabic dialects and so the originally Persian word is usually pronounced with a w sound in Arabic. The word appears as a surname in the Levant or for people descended from Levantine communities, particularly in Lebanon, Syria, Israel, the Palestinian territories and Afghanistan. In Iraq, the surname, which in Arabic means "wandering, roaming", has been borne by people of Jewish descent as well. Dervish Convoy
Operation Dervish (21–31 August 1941) was the first of the Arctic Convoys of the Second World War by which the Western Allies of World War II, Allies supplied material to the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany. Included in the convoy was the personnel and equipment of an RAF Wing (military aviation unit), Wing, for the air defence of the Russian ports, several civilians and diplomatic missions. The convoy sailed from Liverpool on 12 August 1941 and arrived at Archangelsk on 31 August 1941. There were no attempts by the or the to intercept the convoy and neither side suffered casualties.
