Derrière L'Étoile Studios
Derrière L'Étoile Studios was founded in New York City in 1978 by master printmaker Maurice Sanchez. Sanchez trained at Tamarind Institute. The studio specializes in a unique form of monoprinting, which allows for more than one impression to be created from the plate. Works from the studio are in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum , the National Gallery of Art, and the Princeton University Art Museum. Master Printmaker
Master printmakers or master printers are specialized technicians who hand-print editions of works of an artist in printmaking. Master printmakers often own and/or operate their own printmaking studio or print shop. Business activities of a Master printshop may include: publishing and printing services, educational workshops or classes, mentorship of artists, and artist residencies. Tamarind Institute
Tamarind Institute is a lithography workshop created in 1960https://tamarind.unm.edu/about/history/ as a division of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, United States. It began as Tamarind Lithography Workshop, a California non-profit corporation founded by June Wayne on Tamarind Avenue in Los Angeles in 1960. Monoprinting
Monoprinting is a type of printmaking where the intent is to make unique prints, that may explore an image serially. Other methods of printmaking create editioned multiples, the monoprint is editioned as 1 of 1. There are many techniques of mono-printing, in particular the monotype. Printmaking techniques which can be used to make mono-prints include lithography, woodcut, and etching. Types A monoprint is a single impression of an image made from a reprintable block. Materials such as metal plates, litho stones or wood blocks are used for etching upon. Rather than printing multiple copies of a single image, only one impression may be produced, either by painting or making a collage on the block.
