Derrinlough Briquette Factory
The Derrinlough briquette factory was a briquette manufacturing facility in County Offaly, Ireland, opened in 1957. It ceased production on 26 May 2023. History The factory was constructed by Bord na Móna, Bord Na Mona from 1957 to 1959, near Birr, County Offaly, Birr in County County Offaly, Offaly. Production started in 1959 and it was officially opened in 1960. Part of the cost was financed by a £500,000 loan from Guinness in addition to other borrowings. The original briquette factory in Lullymore was unable to meet market demands by the 1950s as it could only produce about 40000 tonnes per annum even after modifications. Plans were advanced for two new factories, one located in the Derrygreenagh group of bogs in east Offaly and a second in the Boora Bog, Boora group in west Offaly. Bord na Móna (; English: "The Peat Board") is a semi-state company in Ireland, created in 1946 by the Turf Development Act 1946. The company began developing the peatlands of Ireland with the aim to provide economic benefit for Irish Midland communities and achieve security of energy supply for the recently formed Irish Republic. Birr (; , meaning "plain of water") is a town in County Offaly, Ireland. Between 1620 and 1899 it was called Parsonstown, after the Parsons family who were local landowners and hereditary Earl of Rosse, Earls of Rosse. Boora Bog
Boora Bog ( Irish ''Portach na Buaraí'') is a cutaway peat bog situated in County Offaly, Ireland. Peat was harvested for fuel between the 1950s and 1970s, and the land is now being reclaimed for agricultural and eco-tourism use. There was a lake called Lough Boora (''Loch na Buaraí''), which was drained by Bord na Móna, but was not used for peat production: this area is now maintained as a nature reserve by the Irish Wildlife Trust. There are two angling lakes. Archaeology In 1977, a prehistoric site was discovered at Lough Boora. Excavations revealed a temporary settlement dated to the Mesolithic era.
