Derbyshire County Cricket Club In 1920
Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1920 was the English cricket club Derbyshire County Cricket Club, Derbyshire's fiftieth season. It was the club's twenty-second season in the County Championship and the most disastrous season ever experienced by any side since the County Championship was established. Derbyshire lost 17 of the 18 matches played and the other was abandoned without a ball being bowled. 1920 season John Chapman (cricketer, born 1877), John Chapman was captain for the season, having held the post twice before World War I. The team was very unstable. Thirty eight players played for Derbyshire in the season, but only six played in more than half the matches. This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first-class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888, Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first-class status. William Tomlinson
William James Vincent Tomlinson (10 August 1901 – 16 May 1984) was an English schoolmaster and cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire and Cambridge University from 1920 to 1924. Tomlinson was born at Winshill, Derbyshire the son of Robert George Tomlinson and his wife Christiana Gibson Bowie. His father was a director of Salt's Brewery in Burton-on-Trent and had also played cricket for Derbyshire. He was educated at Felsted School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Tomlinson made his first-class debut for Derbyshire in August 1920 when he bowled 5-53 against Sussex, taking the wickets of Harold and Arthur Gilligan and Maurice Tate. However that was to remain his best performance. He played three more games in the season when Derbyshire failed to win a match. Timothy Boden
Timothy Walter Boden (19 May 1901 – 5 September 1969) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1920. Boden was born at Sherborne, Dorset. His grandfather, Henry, and great-uncle Walter were present at the inaugural meeting of Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1870 and both played first-class cricket in the latter half of the 19th century. Boden was educated at Eton and played in the Eton v Harrow matches in 1918. Boden played in one game for Derbyshire during the 1920 season which was against Sussex in August. Boden played in the middle order and made 5 and 9 in his two first-class innings. Boden married Pauline Alison Copland. Geoffrey Brooke-Taylor
Geoffrey Parker Brooke-Taylor (25 October 1895 – 13 January 1968) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Cambridge University in 1919 and 1920, for Derbyshire in 1920 and for Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in 1928. Brooke-Taylor was born at Bakewell Hall, Bakewell, Derbyshire. He was educated at Cheltenham College where he was cricket captain in his last year. On 6 October 1914 he joined the 4th North Midland (Howitzer) Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery as a Second Lieutenant. and served with them in World War I. Allen Turner (24 October 1891 – 7 January 1961) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1920. Turner was born in Heath, Derbyshire. Turner made just two appearances for Derbyshire in the 1920 season, both in August. In his first match against Leicestershire, he took a wicket and a catch and scored two runs in both innings. Albert Woodland (10 June 1895 – 31 January 1955) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1920. Woodland was born in Conisbrough, Yorkshire. He joined Derbyshire in the 1920 season and began in a game for the county against Dublin University. He made his first-class debut for Derbyshire in a match against Warwickshire during May 1920, playing as the third bowler and a tailend batsman, but took no wickets. His second and final first-class fixture came against Essex when he bowled three overs and scored single figures in both innings. Douglas Valentine Linathan (29 May 1885 — 17 December 1932) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1920. Linathan was born in Sheffield. He played three matches for Derbyshire during the 1920 season making his debut against Yorkshire in July, a game in which he made one catch but little progress with the bat or ball. He played two further matches for the side. Against Nottinghamshire he finished not out in the first innings, batting in the lower order. Kenneth William Cecil Dobson (28 August 1900 – 6 March 1960) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler who played for Derbyshire and Warwickshire. Dobson was born in Barrow upon Trent, Derbyshire, the son of Frederick William Dobson and his wife Agnes Eadie. He played three County Cricket matches for Derbyshire in May 1920.
