''Der Weg nach Surabaya. Reportagen und kleine Prosa'' () is a 1997 collection of texts by the Austrian writer Christoph Ransmayr. Collecting texts from a period of nearly two decades, it mainly consists of travel writing from Europe, Africa and Asia, but also includes other material such as three acceptance speeches from literary award ceremonies. It was reviewed on ' on 25 April 1997. Christoph Ransmayr
Christoph Ransmayr (; born 20 March 1954) is an Austrian writer. Life Born in Wels, Upper Austria, Ransmayr grew up in Roitham near Gmunden and the Traunsee. From 1972 to 1978 he studied philosophy and ethnology in Vienna. He worked there as cultural editor for the newspaper ''Extrablatt'' from 1978 to 1982, also publishing articles and essays in ''GEO (magazine), GEO'', ''TransAtlantik'' and ''Merian (magazine), Merian''. After his novel ''Die letzte Welt'' was published in 1988, he traveled extensively across Ireland, Asia, North and South America. This is reflected in his works, where he looks at life as a tourist and believes that good writing needs ignorance, speechlessness, light luggage, curiosity, or at least a willingness not only to judge the world, but to experience it. In 1994 he moved to West Cork, Ireland, as a friend offered to lease him a splendid house on the Atlantic coast for a very affordable rent. The genre of travel literature or travelogue encompasses outdoor literature, guide books, nature writing, and travel memoirs. The Dog King
''The Dog King'' is a 1995 novel by the Austrian writer Christoph Ransmayr. Its original title is ''Morbus Kitahara''. A work of alternative history, it is set in Central Europe after World War II and the implementation of the Morgenthau Plan, which has deindustrialized the region and created a ruthless post-apocalyptic-esque society. The main character is the son of a blacksmith who becomes the bodyguard of the only man in the area who owns a car. An English translation by John E. Woods was published in 1997. The book received the 1996 Aristeion Prize. Reception Curt Fields wrote in the ''Chicago Tribune'': "The themes are grand, but the writing is far from pompous. Ransmayr's story (and John E.
