The coat of arms of Namibia is the official heraldic symbol of Namibia. Introduced at the time of independence in 1990, it superseded the earlier coat of arms used by the South African administration of the territory. History The Constituent Assembly which drew up the Namibian Constitution in 1989 appointed a National Symbols Sub-Committee to produce a flag and coat of arms for the country. The committee enlisted the assistance of the South African Bureau of Heraldry. Libertina Amathila
Libertina Inaviposa Amathila (née Appolus, born 10 December 1940) is a Namibian physician and politician. She served as a member of the National Council and the National Assembly, and was the Deputy-Prime Minister of Namibia from March 2005 to March 2010. Early life and education Libertina Appolus was born in Fransfontein, Kunene Region. Under the SWAPO Nationhood Programme, she received a scholarship to study medicine in Poland and graduated from the Warsaw Medical Academy in 1969, becoming Namibia's first female doctor. She later worked in SWAPO refugee camps. Amathila completed her secondary school in South Africa. In 1962, she went into exile and lived for some time in Tanzania, where she applied for, and received, a scholarship to study in Poland. List Of Colonial Governors Of South West Africa
This article lists the colonial governors of South West Africa. South West Africa was the colonial predecessor of the modern day Namibia, Republic of Namibia from when the territory was controlled by the German Empire (as German South West Africa) and the Union of South Africa. The title of the position changed a number of times. Under German rule, the title of the position went from Commissioner (1884–1893) to Provincial Governor () (1893–1898) to Governor (1898–1915). Under South African rule, the title was Administrator (1915–1977) and Administrator-General (1977–1990). After the United Nations terminated South Africa's mandate to govern South West Africa, the UN appointed United Nations Commissioner for Namibia, commissioners of its own. Politics of Namibia takes place in a framework of a semi-presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the President of Namibia is both head of state and head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by both the president and the government. Legislative power is vested in the two chambers of Parliament. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. Additional to the government political structure Namibia has a network of traditional leadership with currently 51 recognised traditional authorities and their leaders. Elijah Ngurare
Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare (born 28 October 1970) is a Namibian politician and academic who is the current Prime Minister of Namibia. A long-time member and supporter of SWAPO, Namibia's ruling party, he rose through the ranks of the SWAPO Party Youth League (SPYL), first serving as the Secretary for Information, Publicity, and Mobilisation from 2002, before becoming Secretary-General in 2007. He held this position until 2015, when he was expelled from the party. He previously served as an academic at the University of Namibia and later as a director in the Ministry of Agriculture. Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila (born 12 October 1967) is a Namibian politician serving as the Speaker of the National Assembly of Namibia from 21 March 2025.
