The Department of Justice is the current Western Australian government department responsible for the provision of high quality and accessible justice, legal, registry, guardianship and trustee services to meet the needs of the community and the Western Australian Government. History The original ''Department of Attorney General'' existed between 1891 and 1909. The subsequent department between 1909 and 1993 was named the ''Crown Law Department'' and was the longest lasting entity under the one name. In 1993 the ''Ministry of Justice'' was formed by the amalgamation of the former Corrective Services and Crown Law Departments and the Youth Justice Bureau, as well as some of the functions of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. David Malcolm Justice Centre
The David Malcolm Justice Centre is a 33-storey, tall skyscraper on Barrack Street in Perth, Western Australia. The building is named after David Malcolm, a former chief justice of Western Australia, and houses civil courtrooms for the Supreme Court of Western Australia as well as office space for the Department of Treasury and the Department of Justice. History In September 2012, Mirvac sold 50% of its stake in the building to Singaporean company Keppel REIT for (equivalent to in ). Construction was completed in August 2015, with fit-out following that. The building was officially named the David Malcolm Justice Centre by Premier Colin Barnett on 11 March 2016, after David Malcolm, a former chief justice of Western Australia for eighteen years. Barrack Street
Barrack Street is one of two major cross-streets in the central business district of Perth, Western Australia. Together with St Georges Terrace, Wellington Street and William Street it defines the boundary of the main shopping precinct of the central city. Route description Barrack Street commences at Barrack Street Jetty, and the adjacent Barrack Square. Moving in an uphill direction away from the Swan River, it passes alongside the Supreme Court Gardens and the Stirling Gardens. Crossing St Georges Terrace, Barrack Street then passes alongside the heritage-listed Treasury Buildings and the Perth Town Hall. Peter Damien Quinlan, SC is the Lieutenant-Governor of Western Australia. He was sworn in on the 27 November 2019. He is also the Chief Justice of Western Australia. His appointment was announced on 1 August 2018, and took effect on 13 August. He was the Solicitor-General of Western Australia from 2016 to 2018. Quinlan attended John XXIII College before studied commerce and law at the University of Western Australia; he won the HCF Keall Prize for best final year student. He worked in the Crown Solicitor's Office from 1993 to 1995 as an assistant to the Solicitor General, then again from 1996 working in constitutional and administrative law.
