The Department of Home Security was an Australian government department that existed between June 1941 and February 1946. History When this department was first established in June 1941, it was nearly two years after Australia entered World War II. Frederick Shedden carried out the duties of the head of the department when it was first established, and at the same time he was retaining his position as Secretary of the Department of Defence Co-ordination. Alexander Welch was appointed permanent head of the department in December 1941. The department was transferred to Canberra in 1941, a step in the development of Canberra as Australia's seat of government. In March 1944, the department's Secretary Alexander Welch was appointed Director of War Housing and M.J.S. Thomson was appointed acting secretary of the department. Joe Abbott (Australian Politician)
Joseph Palmer Abbott (18 October 1891 – 7 May 1965) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Country Party and served in the House of Representatives from 1940 to 1949, representing the Division of New England. Hubert Peter Lazzarini (; 8 September 1884 – 1 October 1952) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and represented the Division of Werriwa in the House of Representatives for over 30 years (1919–1931, 1934–1952). Sir Frederick Geoffrey Shedden (8 August 1893 – 8 July 1971) was an Australian public servant who served as Secretary of the Department of Defence from 1937 to 1956. Background and early life Frederick Shedden was born 8 August 1893 in Kyneton, Victoria. His father was George Shedden, a wheelwright born in Victoria. His mother was Sarah Elizabeth (née Grey) from England. He was the youngest of five children. His was schooled at Kyneton State and Kyneton Grammar schools.
