Department Of Health (New Brunswick)
The Department of Health is a part of the Government of New Brunswick. It is charged with administration and delivery of public healthcare in New Brunswick. History The department was first established in 1918 as the Department of Health and Labour and gradually grew in importance, splitting in two in 1944 with one section becoming the Department of Health. It began to grow rapidly in the 1960s when Premier Louis Robichaud's equal opportunity program consolidated jurisdiction for health with the province as opposed to local governments and also with the introduction of public medicine in the same decade. The department eventually came to be named the Department of Health and Community Services as it gained responsibility for new programs such as long-term care in nursing homes, local psychological services and so on. Government Of New Brunswick
The Government of New Brunswick (french: Gouvernement du Nouveau-Brunswick) refers to the provincial government of the province of New Brunswick. Its powers and structure are set out in the Constitution Act, 1867. The Province of New Brunswick is now governed by a unicameral legislature, the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, which operates in the Westminster system of government minus the bicamerality. The political party that, either by itself or in combination with another party supporting them, wins the largest number of seats in the legislature normally forms the government with the party's leader becoming premier of the province, i.e., the head of the government. Charles Gallagher
Charles Gunter Gallagher (September 21, 1925 – June 20, 2007) was a farmer and political figure in New Brunswick, Canada. He represented Carleton County and then Carleton North in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick as a Progressive Conservative member from 1970 to 1987. He was born in Centreville, New Brunswick, the son of James Isaac Gallagher and May Irene Gunter. Gallagher was educated at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, Macdonald College and McGill University. In 1948, he married Kathleen Frances Olmstead. Brenda Robertson
Brenda Mary Robertson (née Tubb, May 23, 1929 – September 23, 2020) was a Canadian politician who served as Senator. She was the first woman elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick and the first woman to become a cabinet minister in the province. Life Born in Sussex, New Brunswick, she was elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick representing the district of Albert in 1967 and was re-elected four times (1970, 1974, 1978, and 1982) representing the district of Riverview. In 1970, she was appointed Youth Minister. She was also Minister of Social Welfare, Minister of Social Services, Minister of Health, and Minister for Social Program Reform. She remained a Member until her appointment to the Senate on December 21, 1984 representing the senatorial division of Riverview, New Brunswick. Lawrence R. Garvie (June 23, 1933 – March 11, 2011) was a lawyer and former politician in New Brunswick, Canada. He represented the City of Fredericton and then Fredericton North in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1968 to 1978 as a Progressive Conservative member. He was born in Westmount, Quebec, the son of Gordon S. Garvie and Helen Carten, and educated in Fredericton and at the University of New Brunswick. In 1960, he married Valerie Bennetts. L. Norbert Thériault (February 16, 1921 – June 19, 2016) was a Canadian politician. He was born in Eel River Bridge, New Brunswick, Canada. He represented Northumberland (1960–1974) and Baie-du-Vin (1974–1979) in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, and was a provincial cabinet minister in New Brunswick in the 1960s. Frederic Addison McGrand (July 5, 1895 – September 3, 1988) was a Canadian physician and politician. Born in Keswick Ridge, New Brunswick, he received his education at St. Thomas College and his medical degree from McGill University. Pio Laporte
Pio H. Laporte ( MD) (September 1, 1878 - July 29, 1939) was a Canadian physician and politician in the Province of New Brunswick. Born in Verchères, Quebec, Pio Laporte studied medicine at Laval University in Quebec City then at the Paris School of Medicine in Paris, France. By 1903, he had made his home in Edmundston, New Brunswick where he practised medicine and was on the staff of the Hôtel-Dieu in nearby Saint-Basile. Pio Laporte entered municipal politics, serving as president of the local school board and mayor of Edmundston. In 1935 he moved into provincial politics and was elected to the 38th New Brunswick Legislative Assembly as the Liberal Party candidate for the riding of Madawaska County. His Party won power and new Premier Allison Dysart immediately appointed Laporte to his Cabinet as the Minister of Health and Labour.
