Denmark Expedition
The Denmark expedition (), also known as the Denmark Expedition to Greenland's Northeast Coast and the Danmark Expedition after the ship's name, was an expedition to northeastern Greenland in 1906–1908. Despite being overshadowed by the deaths under tragic circumstances of three of the expedition's leading members ( Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen (1872–1907), Niels Peter Høeg Hagen (1877–1907), and Jørgen Brønlund (1877–1907)), the Denmark expedition was not a failure. It achieved its main cartographic objectives and succeeded in exploring the vast region, drawing accurate charts of formerly unexplored coastlines and fjords, naming numerous geographic features, and gathering a wealth of scientific data. Kaiser Franz Joseph Fjord
Kaiser Franz Joseph Fjord (; ) is the northernmost fjord system in the NE Greenland National Park area, East Greenland. Geography The Kaiser Franz Joseph Fjord has its mouth in the Foster Bay of the Greenland Sea, between Cape Mackenzie at the eastern end of Geographical Society Island and Cape Franklin, the southern end of the mainland's Gauss Peninsula; Bontekoe Island lies in the bay off its mouth. It extends westwards for about 100 km, then at Eleonore Bay in an NNE/SSW direction for about 32 km, bending again westwards at Cape Mohn, the western end of Ymer Island, branching again with the Isfjord extending northwestwards for over 60 km. Faeroe Islands
The Faroe Islands ( ) (alt. the Faroes) are an archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean and an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. Located between Iceland, Norway, and the United Kingdom, the islands have a population of 54,609 and a land area of 1,393 km². Greenlanders (; ), also called Greenlandics or Greenlandic people, are the people of Greenland. Most speak Greenlandic language, Greenlandic, an Eskaleut languages, Eskaleut language. The Royal Danish Navy (, ) is the Naval warfare, sea-based branch of the Danish Armed Forces force. Danmarkshavn
Danmarkshavn (Denmark's Harbour) is a small weather station located in Dove Bay, on the northeastern shore of the Germania Land Peninsula, in Northeast Greenland National Park, Greenland. History The location was chosen as a suitable winter harbor by the Denmark expedition in 1906 for their ship Danmark (1906), ''Danmark''. It became the main base of the expedition, from where sledge journeys and scientific observations were carried out. Description The permanent population of the base is six. Danmarkshavn is also known as the northernmost location on the coast of the Greenland Sea that non-icebreaking vessels can pass through. Therefore, it is resupplied by cargo ship in August every other year; thus the population increases somewhat for a brief time every other August. Germania Land
Germania Land or Germanialand is a peninsula in northeastern Greenland. Despite the high latitude it is largely unglaciated. History This peninsula was named by Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen, leader of the Danmark expedition, to commemorate its survey by the Second German North Polar Expedition led by Carl Koldewey in 1869 on the vessel ''Germania'' and as a compliment to Alfred Wegener, the German member of the ''Danmark expedition''. In central Germania Land there is a cairn erected by the members of the Second German North Polar Expedition on 15 April 1870 in order to mark the farthest northern point they reached. Thomas Vilhelm Garde
Thomas Vilhelm Garde (22 October 1859 – 24 June 1926) was a Danish naval officer, distinguished for his explorations in Greenland. Garde became a sub-lieutenant of the Danish Navy in 1880, rising to the rank of First lieutenant in 1881, captain in 1898, Commander in 1908 and Rear Admiral in 1918. He retired from active service in 1921. Explorations Garde was junior leader of the Umiak Expedition of 1883-85 led by Gustav Holm. They thoroughly explored the coast of southeast Greenland, by journeys from Cape Farewell using umiak boats. Garde explored Lindenow Fjord (62° 15' N), where have been found the Scandinavian ruins on the east coast. Georg Carl Amdrup
Vice-Admiral Sir Georg Carl Amdrup (November 19, 1866 – January 15, 1947) was a Royal Danish Navy officer and explorer. Career In 1884, Amdrup, of the Royal Danish Navy, was sent to Amassalik. After wintering, he explored the coast to the north, including an examination of the Kangerlussuaq Fjord, known until then only from Inuit reports. He mapped a large length of coastline while collecting many geological and ethnological finds. By July 1885, he reached Aggas Island (67° 22' North), the furthest north of this survey.
