Denmark (European Parliament Constituency)
Denmark is a European Parliament constituency for the elections to the European Parliament covering the Member state of the European Union Denmark, but not other parts of the Danish Realm such as the Faroe Islands or Greenland, which are not a part of the EU. It is currently represented by fifteen Member of the European Parliament, Members of the European Parliament. Denmark uses the D'Hondt method of proportional representation. Greenland (European Parliament Constituency)
Greenland was a European Parliament constituency for elections in the European Union covering the territory of Greenland. It seceded from the European Community in 1985. It was represented by one Member of the European Parliament. The eligible electorate was 29,188. Finn Lynge
Finn Lynge (22 April 1933 – 4 April 2014) was a Greenlandic politician, Indigenous rights activist, former Catholic priest and civil servant who from 1979 until 1984 was the sole Member of the European Parliament for Greenland. Early life and career Lynge was born in 1933 and grew up in Nuuk. As a teenager he moved to Denmark with his parents and graduated from secondary school in 1951. Lynge studied Danish and French at the University of Copenhagen before serving in the military. He trained to be a Catholic priest before serving in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, from 1963 to 1964. He later served as a priest in Denmark and in Greenland. He was the first native Greenlander Catholic priest since the Protestant Reformation. He subsequently resigned as a priest to marry. June Movement
The June Movement () was a Danish left Eurosceptic political organisation founded 23 August 1992. It took its name from the referendum on the Maastricht Treaty that took place in Denmark in June of that year. The movement was a member of the European political party EUDemocrats - Alliance for a Europe of Democracies. The June Movement acknowledged Denmark's membership of the European Union, but opposed the process of tighter European integration including the Lisbon Treaty, and in general the movement wanted the EU to deal with only cross-border issues such as environmental and trade policies. The movement participated in elections for the European Parliament, but neither in local elections nor in elections for the Parliament of Denmark. Jens-Peter Bonde
Jens-Peter Rossen Bonde (27 March 1948 – 4 April 2021) was a Danish politician who served as Member of the European Parliament (MEP) with the June Movement. He resigned as an MEP in May 2008. Bonde was elected to the European Parliament in the first election in 1979 with the People's Movement against the EU. He was re-elected 6 times consecutively. In 1992 he co-founded the June Movement which he chaired until his retirement in May 2008. Jens-Peter Bonde emerged from the Danish Left of the 1970s, however he was on the centre-left for much of his life. In November 2005 he was the inspiration behind the setting up of a new Party at a European level, EUDemocrats. He was its president from 2005 to 2009. Else Hammerich
Else Hammerich (7 September 1936 – 20 March 2021) was a Danish politician who served as a Member of the European Parliament from 1979 to 1989. A member of the protest movement People's Movement against the EU, she was elected to the European Parliament for this association. People's Movement Against The EU
The People's Movement against the EU () is a far-left political association in Denmark against the European Union. It was founded in 1972 as a cross-party campaign platform for a 'no' vote in Denmark's referendum on EEC membership. The People's Movement was represented in the European Parliament from 1979 until 2019, when it lost its single seat in the European Parliament election. The movement has approximately 3,500 personal members, as well as collective members such as political parties, NGOs and trade unions (mostly local branches). The individual members are organised in about 100 local branches. Socialist People's Party (Denmark)
The Green Left, since March 2022 the English name for Socialistisk Folkeparti (, , abbr. SF), is a democratic socialist political party in Denmark. SF was founded on 15 February 1959 by Aksel Larsen, a former leader of the Communist Party of Denmark (DKP), who was removed for criticizing the Soviet intervention in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Larsen aimed to create a third way between Denmark's U.S.-oriented social democracy and Soviet-oriented communism, combining democracy with socialism. Kjeld Olesen
Kjeld Olesen (8 July 1932 – 25 July 2024) was a Danish Social Democratic politician who served as Minister for Foreign Affairs of Denmark from 1979 to 1982. Career In 1955 Olesen was part of the CIA team who secretly listened in to the leftist politicians Ragnhild Andersen and Alfred Jensen. He also worked in a private intelligence organisation called Arbejdernes Informations Central (Danish: ''Information Centre of the Labour Movement'') financed by the labour movement. Its employers were members of the Social Democratic Party. Later, Olesen became a member of Parliament (1966–1987) and served as deputy chairman of the Social Democratic Party in the 1970s. Mette Groes
Mette Groes (1937–2014) was a Danish politician, social worker and lecturer at Aalborg University. Representing the Social Democrats, she was a temporary member of the Folketing (1977– 1987) and a member of the European Parliament (1979–1980). Eva Gredal
Eva Wilhelmson Gredal (19 February 1927 – 2 August 1995) was a Danish politician who served as a Member of the European Parliament for Denmark from 1979 to 1989. On a national level, she served as Minister of Social Affairs from 1971 to 1973 and again from 1975 to 1978. Biography Gredal was born in Hvorup. Her father, Albert, was a pastor and her mother, Mary, worked as a seamstress. She graduated from secondary school in 1947, and after marrying Otto in 1949, returned to school to take up social work, and graduated in 1954.
