Denis Browne (bishop)
Denis George Browne (21 September 1937 – 1 September 2024) was the bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Hamilton, New Zealand having served as its bishop from 1994 to 2014. Previously, he was Bishop of Cook Islands and Niue (1977–1983) and then became the tenth Catholic Bishop of Auckland (1983–1994). Biography Browne was born in Auckland on 21 September 1937, the son of Neville John and Catherine Anne Browne. Browne received his primary education at St. Michael's Primary school, Remuera, and his secondary education at St. Peter's College, Epsom, conducted by the Christian Brothers. He then went on to study at Holy Name Seminary, Christchurch (operated by the Jesuit order) and Holy Cross College, Mosgiel (operated by the Vincentian order). Denis Browne was ordained a Catholic priest on 30 June 1962 by James Liston, Archbishop of Auckland, at St Patrick's Cathedral, Auckland. Denis Browne (1796–1864) was an Irish Dean in the middle of the 19th century. Browne was born in County Mayo and educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He was for many years the incumbent at Enniscorthy. He was Dean of Emly from 1850 until his death. He was a close friend of John Gregg, Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross from 1862 to 1878. Denis Browne (1763 – 14 August 1828) was an Irish politician, landowner and High Sheriff who was notorious for his role in punishing rebels in the 1798 rebellion. He acquired the nickname "''Denis the Rope"'' or "''Donochadli an Rópa''" in Irish. This was owing to his zeal in hanging suspected rebels, in addition to assisting in hanging his own godson. Life Browne was the second son of two sons and four daughters born to Peter Browne, 2nd Earl of Altamont and Elizabeth Kelly of Lisduffe, County Galway. He was born and raised at the family home of Westport House, County Mayo. He was a direct descendant of the pirate, Grace O'Malley (c.1530-c.1603). Denis Browne, 10th Marquess Of Sligo
Denis Edward Browne, 10th Marquess of Sligo (13 December 1908 – 11 September 1991), known as Denis Browne until 1952, was an Irish peer. Life Browne was the son of Captain Lord Alfred Eden Browne, the fifth son of Henry Browne, 5th Marquess of Sligo. His mother was Cicely Wormald, daughter of Edward Wormald. In 1952 he succeeded his uncle in the marquessate. Lord Sligo married Jose Gauche, daughter of William Gauche, in 1930. In 1982 his book ''Westport House and the Brownes'' was published. He died in September 1991, aged 82, and was succeeded by his son, Jeremy Browne, 11th Marquess of Sligo. Denis Browne (surgeon)
Sir Denis John Wolko Browne (2 April 1892 – 9 January 1967) was the first British surgeon to devote his practice entirely to the care of children. A native of Australia, he served in the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps in World War I before moving to England and joining the staff of the Great Ormond Street Hospital, Hospital for Sick Children at Great Ormond Street. An amateur tennis player in the 1920s, he made four appearances at The Championships, Wimbledon, Wimbledon. He created several medical devices, including the Denis Browne bar and a restraint device used in surgery known as the Denis Browne crucifix. Browne suggested modifications to the surgical or medical treatment of children with several conditions. He devised his own approach to the repair of hypospadias and worked on improvements to the management of other genitourinary, gastrointestinal, orthopaedic and cardiovascular problems.
