Democracy And Development Through Unity
Democracy and Development in Unity () is a political party in Suriname. The party identifies as reformist, and was founded on 2 December 1999. The party's by-laws state that its board will be composed of 50% women and it will strive for equal numbers of men and women in all positions, the only party in the country to do so. The party had one seat in the National Assembly from 2010 to 2020, held by its then-leader Carl Breeveld. In the 2020 Surinamese general election General elections were held in Suriname on 25 May 2020. The elections occurred concurrently with an economic crisis in Suriname, as well as the COVID-19 crisis. National Assembly (Suriname)
The National Assembly (, commonly abbreviated "DNA") is the Parliament, representing the legislative branch of government in Suriname. It is a unicameral legislature. The assembly has been situated in the former park house at the Independence Square in Paramaribo, after a fire destroyed the old building of representation on 1 August 1996. A reconstruction of the old building was completed in 2022. The 51 members of parliament are elected every five years by open list proportional representation on the basis of the country's component districts. 2020 Surinamese General Election
General elections were held in Suriname on 25 May 2020. The elections occurred concurrently with an economic crisis in Suriname, as well as the COVID-19 crisis. Electoral system The 51 seats in the National Assembly are elected using party-list proportional representation under the D'Hondt method in ten multi-member constituencies containing between two and seventeen seats. The ten electoral constituencies are coterminous with the ten administrative districts of Suriname. Voters also have the option of casting a preferential vote for one of the candidates on the chosen list in order to increase their place in the list, and the candidate(s) having obtained the most preferential votes in the lists that obtained seats are declared elected.
