Demetrio Do Amaral De Carvalho
Demetrio do Amaral de Carvalho (b. East Timor, 2 July 1966) is an environmentalist from East Timor. He has been State Secretary for the Environment since 2018. Background de Carvalho grew up in villages south of Liquica on the north coast of East Timor, and was 9 years old when in 1975 his father was murdered by members of FRETILIN. In the same year Indonesia occupied East Timor. He hid in the jungle until the age of 13, and became a resistance fighter against the period of Indonesian occupation. In 1988, with his education disrupted by the war, Carvalho graduated from the SMA 5 school in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He later joined National Resistance of East Timorese Students ( (RENETIL)), East Timor's leading student resistance movement. de Carvalho was involved in the publication of the first RENETIL magazines. The Goldman Environmental Prize is a prize awarded annually to grassroots environmental activists, one from each of the world's six geographic regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands and Island Nations, North America, and South and Central America. José Maria Vasconcelos (born 10 October 1956), popularly known as Taur Matan Ruak (Tetum for "Two Sharp Eyes"), is an East Timorese politician who has served as the prime minister of East Timor since 22 June 2018. He was also President of East Timor from 20 May 2012 to 20 May 2017. La'o Hamutuk ( Tetum for "walking together"), or the Timor-Leste Institute for Development Monitoring and Analysis, is an East Timorese non-governmental organisation (NGO). It is based on Avenida Dom Ricardo da Silva, , in the national capital, Dili. The organisation is a progressive think tank collective that analyzes and reports on development issues, rights and processes, including the actions of international institutions and the government of East Timor.
