Deftones is an American alternative metal band formed in Sacramento, California in 1988. They were formed by frontman Chino Moreno, lead guitarist Stephen Carpenter and drummer Abe Cunningham, with bassist Chi Cheng (musician), Chi Cheng and keyboardist and turntablist Frank Delgado (American musician), Frank Delgado joining the line-up in 1990 and 1999, respectively. The band's experimental rock, experimental nature has led some critics to describe them as "the Radiohead of metal". After the line-up settled in 1993, the band secured a recording contract with Maverick Records, and subsequently released their debut album ''Adrenaline (album), Adrenaline'' in 1995. Extensive touring and word-of-mouth promotion of the album helped Deftones garner a dedicated fan base. Shepherd's Bush Empire (currently known as O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire for sponsorship reasons, and formerly known as the BBC Television Theatre) is a music venue in Shepherd's Bush, West London, run by the Academy Music Group. It was originally built in 1903 as a music hall for impresario Oswald Stoll, designed by theatre architect Frank Matcham; among its early performers was Charlie Chaplin. Phallucy
Phallucy is an American rock band from Sacramento, California. The band's drummer, Abe Cunningham, later became the drummer with the band Deftones. Phallucy has reunited three times: in 1999, 2001 and finally in 2009 for the ''Chi Cheng Benefit Show'' in San Francisco along with Death Angel and other special guests. History Phallucy was a band from Sacramento formed in 1987. The band's name is a combination of the words "fallacy" and "phallus". Original members include Sonny Mayugba (guitar) and David Garcia (vocals). By 1993 the band, which then featured drummer Abe Cunningham, recorded a CD titled ''Valium''. ''White Pony'' is the third studio album by the American alternative metal band Deftones, released on June 20, 2000, through Maverick Records. It was produced by Terry Date, who produced the band's first two albums, ''Adrenaline'' (1995) and '' Around the Fur'' (1997). Recording sessions took place between August and December 1999 at Larrabee Sound Studios in West Hollywood and The Plant Recording Studios in Sausalito, California. The album marked a significant growth in the band's sound, incorporating influences from post-hardcore, trip hop, shoegaze, progressive rock, and post-rock into the alternative metal sound which they had become known for. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is a trade organization that represents the music recording industry in the United States. ''Around the Fur'' is the second studio album by the American alternative metal band Deftones, released on October 28, 1997, by Maverick Records. The songs " My Own Summer (Shove It)" and " Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" were released as singles with accompanying music videos. The album was certified gold by the RIAA in 1999, and was later certified platinum in 2011. Background ''Around the Fur'' has been described as alternative metal, nu metal, and post-hardcore. Adrenaline (album)
''Adrenaline'' is the debut studio album by the American alternative metal band Deftones, released on October 3, 1995, by Maverick Records. The majority of the album was produced by Terry Date, while a hidden track titled "Fist" was produced by Ross Robinson. Background and recording Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham and Chino Moreno were high school friends. All three went to Sacramento's C. K. McClatchy High School together, and participated in the city's skateboarding scene. Carpenter was a fan of heavy metal; Moreno was interested in hardcore punk bands such as Bad Brains as well as post-punk and new wave bands such as Depeche Mode and the Cure. Alternative Metal
Alternative metal (also known as alt-metal) is a genre of heavy metal music that combines heavy metal with influences from alternative rock and other genres not normally associated with metal. Chi Cheng (musician)
Chi Ling Dai Cheng (July 15, 1970 – April 13, 2013) was an American musician and poet, best known as the bassist and backing vocalist for the alternative metal band Deftones. He joined the band in 1990, and stayed with them until his career ended in 2008, when he was involved in a serious automobile crash in Santa Clara, California, while not wearing a seat belt. After the crash, he remained in a semi-comatose state before dying of cardiac arrest in April 2013. After Cheng's hospitalization, a friend of the band, Sergio Vega, became the band's full-time bassist until 2021, having previously filled in for Cheng. Early life Cheng was born in July 1970 in Stockton, California, to Jeanne and Yin Yan Cheng. His father, a prominent Stockton cardiologist, was a Chinese immigrant while his mother is Caucasian.
