Deep Creek (Trinity River Tributary)
Deep Creek is a stream in Wise County, Texas. Description The creek rises to the southeast of Decatur, close to U.S. Route 287. The creek flows south for five miles before meeting the Trinity River between Boyd and Aurora. History Sam Woody, an early settler, built a wooden house on the bank of the stream in 1854, establishing the first home in Wise County. A small community named Deep Creek soon formed, however a cemetery is the only remaining feature. Wise County, Texas
Wise County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 68,632. Its county seat is Decatur. Wise County is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth– Arlington metropolitan statistical area. Its Wise Eyes crime-watch program, eventually adopted by mostly rural counties in several states, was started in 1993 by then-Sheriff Phil Ryan. History On November 10, 1837, the Battle of the Knobs was fought in what is now Wise County between about 150 Native American warriors and 18 Republic of Texas soldiers under Lieutenant A. B. Decatur, Texas
Decatur is the county seat of Wise County, Texas, United States. Its population was 6,538 in 2020. History Wise County was established in 1856, and Taylorsville (in honor of Zachary Taylor) was made the county seat. Absalom Bishop, an early settler and member of the Texas Legislature, opposed naming the town after a Whig Party member, and in 1858, arranged to have the name changed to Decatur, in honor of naval hero Stephen Decatur. In 1857, a post office was opened, and the first school was established in 1857. In the early 1860s, a courthouse was erected. Trinity River (Texas)
The Trinity River is a river, the longest with a watershed entirely within the U.S. state of Texas. It rises in extreme northern Texas, a few miles south of the Red River of the South, Red River. The headwaters are separated by the high bluffs on the southern side of the Red River. The Trinity River was previously identified as the stream that the Caddo called Arkikosa in Central Texas and Daycoa nearer the coast. However, in 2022, language preservationists from the Caddo Nation determined their ancestral language lacked the letter “R” sound. Arkikosa was likely a corruption or misspelling of the word Akokisa. Boyd, Texas
Boyd is a town in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,416 in 2020. It is 30 miles (48 km) northwest of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. History Originally named Greasy Bend in reference to the local hog-fattening industry, the settlement was established in the early 1890s by farmers. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad reached the town in 1893, and the settlement was subsequently renamed Parkhurst in reference to one of the railroad's officials.
