December 2023 Mindanao Earthquake
On December 2, 2023, at 22:37 Philippine Standard Time, PST (14:37 Coordinated Universal Time, UTC), a moment magnitude () 7.6 earthquake occurred off the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The shallow subduction earthquake killed at least three people and left 79 injured. Tectonic setting The Philippine Trench which runs east of the Philippine islands represents a major subduction zone where the Philippine Sea plate subducts westwards. At its southern portion, it runs north–south from the eastern coast of Mindanao to the northern part of Halmahera Island in Indonesia. The convergence rate along the trench varies from per year. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), located on Ford Island, Hawaii, is one of two tsunami warning centers in the United States, covering Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific, as well as Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean Sea.
