De Modderige Bol is a Hollow Post mill in Goëngahuizen, Friesland, Netherlands which has been restored to working order. The mill is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 34001. (Click on "Technische gegevens" to view.) History The date that ''De Modderige Bol'' was built is unknown. The earliest record is its appearance on a map dated 1848. Until 1952, the mill drained the polder Adamse, which had an area of . The mill was restored in 1954 and 1969. A further restoration was undertaken in 1978 by millwrights Bouwbedrijf Van Zuiden of Tjerkwerd. Windpump
A windpump is a type of windmill which is used for pumping water. Windpumps were used to pump water since at least the 9th century in what is now Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. The use of wind pumps became widespread across the Muslim world and later spread to China and India. Windmills were later used extensively in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands and the East Anglia area of Great Britain, from the late Middle Ages onwards, to drain land for agricultural or building purposes. Simon Stevin's work in the ''waterstaet'' involved improvements to the sluices and spillways to control flooding. Windmills were already in use to pump the water out, but in ''Van de Molens'' (''On mills''), he suggested improvements, including the idea that the wheels should move slowly, and a better system for meshing of the gear teeth. Tjerkwerd ( fry, Tsjerkwert) is a village in Súdwest-Fryslân municipality in the province Friesland of the Netherlands. It had a population of 455 in January 2017. There is a windmill in the village, De Babuurstermolen. History The village was first mentioned in the 13th century as Kercwere, and means "''terp'' with church". Tjerkwerd is a ''terp'' (artificial living hill) village with a radial structure. The Dutch Reformed church was probably built in the 14th century. In 1888, it was extended and a new tower was constructed. The Walta State was a ''stins'' built at the end of the 15th century, and used to be owned by the Cammingha family. The estate was demolished around 1800. Watse van Cammingha died in 1688. Rixt van Donia, his widow, became the richest woman in Friesland at the time, and is buried in a large marble monument. Vereniging De Hollandsche Molen () ( en, Dutch Windmill Association) is a Dutch organization founded in 1923 to preserve windmills in the Netherlands, to document them, and to restore them. Financial support comes from members and from grants by organizations such as the (a Dutch lottery). Their website provides access to a database which documents some 1400 mills in the Netherlands; "Het Nederlands Molenbestand" is authoritative on the topic. The organization is often given credit for organizing a powerful and effective lobby aimed at procuring money from Dutch government institutions to fund restoration projects. Post Mill
The post mill is the earliest type of European windmill. Its defining feature is that the whole body of the mill that houses the machinery is mounted on a single vertical post, around which it can be turned to bring the sails into the wind. All post mills have an arm projecting from them on the side opposite the sails and reaching down to near ground level. With some, as at Saxtead Green, the arm carries a fantail to turn the mill automatically. With the others the arm serves to rotate the mill into the wind by hand. The earliest post mills in England are thought to have been built in the 12th century. The earliest working post mill in England still used today is to be found at Outwood, Surrey. A rijksmonument (, ) is a national heritage site of the Netherlands, listed by the agency Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (RCE) acting for the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. At the end of February 2015, the Netherlands had 61,822 listed national heritage sites, of which approximately 1,500 are listed as archaeological sites.
