''David with the Head of Goliath'' is an oil-on-poplar panel painting by Italian artists Antonio and Piero del Pollaiuolo, dated to around 1470. It is currently held at the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, Germany. Unlike other paintings and sculptures of David from the period, it had no known association with the Florentine government or the House of Medici and therefore likely hung on the wall of a private palace. It is 46.2 cm × 34 cm. Description The painting depicts David in a refined manner, with his sling obscured along his side. Antonio del Pollaiuolo ( , , ; 17 January 1429/14334 February 1498), also known as Antonio di Jacopo Pollaiuolo or Antonio Pollaiuolo (also spelled Pollaiolo), was an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, engraver, and goldsmith, who made important works in all these media, as well as designing works in others, for example vestments, metal embroidery being a medium he worked in at the start of his career. His most characteristic works in his main media show largely naked male figures in complicated poses of violent action, drawing from classical examples and often centred on a heroic Hercules. Piero del Pollaiuolo ( , , ; also spelled Pollaiolo; – by 1496), whose birth name was Piero Benci, was an Italian Renaissance painter from Florence. His older brother, by about ten years, was the artist Antonio del Pollaiuolo and the two frequently worked together. Their work shows both classical influences and an interest in human anatomy; according to Vasari, the brothers carried out dissections to improve their knowledge of the subject (though modern scholars tend to doubt this). Giorgio Vasari, who wrote several decades after both brothers were dead, includes a joint biography of Antonio and Piero del Pollaiuolo in his ''Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects''.
