Daniel Rorke
Daniel Rorke is a tenor and soprano saxophonist from Australia who now resides in Ireland. He grew up on Billen Cliffs commune outside of the town of Nimbin, in northern New South Wales. Rorke holds a Bachelor of Jazz Studies with first class honour from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and a Master's degree in jazz performance from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology "Jazzlinja" in Trondheim. While in Sydney, he studied with American musicians Gordon Brisker and William Motzing, Australians Dale Barlow, Dave Panichi and Col Loughnan and New Zealand-born pianist Mike Nock. He also studied the history of contemporary composition with Richard Toop and shakuhachi with grand master Riley Lee. While in the United States, Rorke took private lessons with pianist Kenny Werner and saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi. Tenor Saxophone
The tenor saxophone is a medium-sized member of the saxophone family, a group of instruments invented by Adolphe Sax in the 1840s. The tenor and the alto are the two most commonly used saxophones. The tenor is pitched in the key of B (while the alto is pitched in the key of E), and written as a transposing instrument in the treble clef, sounding an octave and a major second lower than the written pitch. Modern tenor saxophones which have a high F key have a range from A2 to E5 (concert) and are therefore pitched one octave below the soprano saxophone. People who play the tenor saxophone are known as "tenor saxophonists", "tenor sax players", or "saxophonists". Riley Lee
Riley Kelly Lee (born 1951) is an American-born Australian-based shakuhachi player and teacher. In 1980 he became the first non-Japanese person to attain the rank of Dai Shihan (grand master) in the shakuhachi tradition. He is a recipient of two of the most revered lineages of shakuhachi playing, descending from the original Zen Buddhist "priests of nothingness" of the Edo period (1600-1868 CE). His first teachers were Hoshida Ichizan II and Chikuho Sakai II. A later teacher was Katsuya Yokoyama. Personal life Riley Lee was born in Plainview, Texas, of a Chinese father and Caucasian mother. He moved to Shawnee, Oklahoma, in 1957 aged six. He played bass in the rock band The Workouts when he was 13. Alister Spence
Alister Spence is an Australian jazz pianist and composer. Spence leads the Alister Spence Trio with Lloyd Swanton and Toby Hall. They were nominated for the ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album in 2004 for ''Flux'' and in 2007 for ''Mercury''. Bands and artists he has recorded with include the Raymond MacDonald International Big Band, Clarion Fracture Zone, Wanderlust, Australian Art Orchestra, Andrew Robson, and Carl Orr. Musical improvisation (also known as musical extemporization) is the creative activity of immediate ("in the moment") musical composition, which combines performance with communication of emotions and instrumental technique as well as spontaneous response to other musicians. An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME. Henning Sommerro
Henning Sommerro (born 3 May 1952 in Surnadal) is a Norwegian musician, composer and professor at NTNU. Biography Sommerro grew up on the Sommerro farm at Skei in Surnadal. His name became widely known in 1977 when the folk music group Vårsøg released their recording of Hans Hyldbakk’s poem ''Vårsøg''. Sommerro had his first lessons in organ and piano at the age of sixteen at the Music Conservatory in Trondheim. He studied organ there from 1970–1974, and from 1974–1976 he was organist in the villages of Stangvik and Todalen. From 1976–1977 he studied organ and composition at the music academy in Basel, and in 1978 he became director of music at the Teatret Vårt theatre in Molde. Terje Bjørklund
Terje Bjørklund (born 2 January 1945) is a jazz pianist and composer. He was an active jazz pianist until approximately 1980. From then on he has concentrated on composing. Early life and career Bjørklund was born in Narvik. After obtaining his Master's Degree in Musicology at the University of Oslo in 1971, Bjørklund studied composition with Finn Mortensen at the Norwegian Academy of Music (1971–1973). Bjørklund has collected his experiences as a jazz musician in the text book ''Moderne jazzimprovisasjon''. John Pål Inderberg
John Pål Inderberg (born 6 August 1950 Steinkjer, Norway) is a versatile saxophonist and one of the leading traditional musicians in Norway. His playing synthethises many different styles, not least when in partnership with Norwegian and American jazz musicians - players as contrasting as Gil Evans and Lee Konitz. Career As an earlier member of the new cool quartet, Inderberg gave new popularity to the collective art of improvisation in the 1950s. Inderberg's soprano and baritone sax can be heard on a wide range of recordings.
