Daniel Pratt (industrialist)
Daniel Pratt (July 20, 1799 – May 13, 1873) was an American industrialist who pioneered ventures that opened the door for industry in Alabama. Prattville in Autauga County, Alabama, and Birmingham's Pratt City in Jefferson County, Alabama on the Pratt coal seam are both named for him. He is buried in Daniel Pratt Cemetery, located on top of Ginshop Hill near downtown Prattville, Alabama. Early life Pratt was born in Temple, New Hampshire. He left New England in 1819 after earning a release from an architect apprenticeship that he started at age 16. He sailed for Savannah, Georgia and within two years moved to Milledgeville, Georgia. Career By 1827, Pratt was a successful architect and builder recognized as a leader in his trade in the American South. While in Georgia, he met Samuel Griswold, another New Englander, who manufactured cotton gins. He had Pratt manage his factory and within a year Pratt was promoted to partner. "General" Daniel Pratt Jr. (April 11, 1809, in Prattville, Chelsea, Massachusetts – June 21, 1887, in Boston) was an American itinerant speaker, author, performance artist, eccentric, and poet. Life and work Pratt trained as a carpenter but abandoned this craft and wandered about the country doing freelance lecturing. He claimed to have walked over 200,000 miles, from Maine to the Dakotas, visiting 27 states and 16 Indian tribes. He was widely known as the "Great American Traveler," which was how he referred to himself with his characteristic disdain for modesty. His visits to American colleges came to be regarded by the students almost as a regular feature of campus life. He was often an appreciated and honored guest and speaker, though usually met with tongue-in-cheek praise. At times, though, his welcome came pre-worn-out, as when he rushed in on Leonard Bacon as he was entertaining guests at home, shook his hand and announced expectantly, "I, Sir, am no less a man than ... Daniel Pratt (footballer)
Daniel Pratt (born 21 March 1983) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for both and in the Australian Football League (AFL), and a former coach of in the AFL Women's (AFLW) and West Australian Football League (WAFL) competitions. Football career Pratt was taken at pick 42 in the 2000 National AFL Draft from the Northern Eagles in the AFL Queensland league to the Kangaroos. He did not play a game and was delisted at the end of the 2002 season. Pratt usually played as a back pocket but could also be deployed as a half-back flanker or in the midfield. Brisbane Lions Pratt was rookie-listed for 2003 by the Brisbane Lions; a serious hand injury in mid-season required surgery resulting in no further games in 2003. He showed good form and was elevated for 2004. Pratt played three games in 2004 and was not successful. He was subsequently delisted and then nominated for the draft. Daniel Pratt (New York Politician)
Daniel Pratt (1806 Washington County, New York – July 23, 1884 Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Life He worked on his father's farm and from age 18 and taught district school. He then entered Cambridge Academy, and graduated from Union College in 1835. Afterwards he taught school again in Memphis, New York and studied law there with D. D. Hills. He was admitted to the bar in 1836 and opened a law office with Hills in Syracuse. In 1843, he was appointed Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Onondaga County, a post he held until he was legislated out of office in July 1847. He was a justice of the New York Supreme Court from 1847 to 1858, and ex officio a judge of the New York Court of Appeals in 1850 and 1858. Afterwards he resumed the practice of law in partnership with D. J. Mitchell and Wilber M. Brown in Syracuse.
