Charles De Menou D'Aulnay
Charles de Menou d'Aulnay (''de Charnisay'') (–1650) was a French pioneer of European settlement in North America and Governor of Acadia (1635–1650). Biography D'Aulnay was a member of the French nobility who was at various times a sea captain, a lieutenant in the French navy to his cousin Isaac de Razilly, and Governor of Acadia (now primarily Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Canada). He was born at Château de Charnizay, Indre-et-Loire, France. His father was a high-ranking official for Louis XIII. Isaac de Razilly, having been selected by the government to restore to France her Acadian possessions, became governor of Acadia in 1632, and d'Aulnay was one of his able assistants, borrowing funds, hiring ships, and recruiting men for the regular ocean crossings to and from France for the Compagnie des Cent-Associés and a private company, Razilly-Condonnier. The Church of Saint-Pierre d'Aulnay (French: Église Saint-Pierre d'Aulnay) is an important Medieval church on the way to Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, in Aulnay, Charente-Maritime. The Church is thought to have been built in 1120–1140. Numerous oriental influences can be seen in its designs. For example, the first arc of the gate is inspired from Oriental designs. Philip of Aunay or of Aulnay (''Philippe d'Aunay'' or ''d'Aulnay'') (c. 1290/93 – Pontoise, (19 April 1314), was a Norman knight implicated in a French royal scandal known as the Tour de Nesle affair.. Biography In the court of Philip IV of France, Philip of Aunay was the equerry to the king's younger brother Charles, Count of Valois, and his older brother Walter of Aunay (also known as Gautier) was equerry to Philip, Count of Poitiers, the king's second son. Vilain of Aulnay (french: Villain d'Aulnay/d'Aunoy) was a French knight from Aulnay-l'Aître in the Champagne (historical province), Champagne who became marshal of the Latin Empire of Constantinople and first Baron of Arcadia in the Principality of Achaea. In the Greek language, Greek version of the ''Chronicle of the Morea'', he is attested as , a form which passed to the other versions of the ''Chronicle'' as Anoé, Annoée or Anoée. Life Vilain was seemingly the son of Oudard d'Aulnay, a Champenois nobleman who in 1206 succeeded Geoffrey of Villehardouin as marshal of Champagne (historical province), Champagne, after the latter left to join the Fourth Crusade. The scholar J. Longnon considers it possible, but not verifiable, that Oudard's mother was a sister of Villehardouin. Oudard had three sons, Erard, Geoffrey and Vilain.
