Concept2, Inc. is an American manufacturer of Rowing (sport), rowing equipment and exercise machines based in Morrisville, Vermont. It is best known for its Drag (physics), air resistance indoor rower, indoor rowing machines (known as "ergometers" or "ergs"), which are considered the standard training and testing machines for competition rowers and can be found in most gyms. Competitive events rowed on Concept2 rowing machines include the CRASH-B Sprints (which style themselves "the world championship for indoor rowing"), the British Rowing Indoor Championships competitions, and the CrossFit Games events (including the CrossFit Open and qualifiers). Concept2 also manufactures oars for sculling and sweep rowing, as well as two other flywheel-based exercise machines: the SkiErg for cross-country skiing and the BikeErg for cycling. Rowing (sport)
Rowing, often called crew American English, in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using Oar (sport rowing), oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars (called blades in the United Kingdom) are attached to the boat using Rowlock, rowlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower (or oarsman) holds two oars, one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain (rowing), coxswain, called eight (rowing), eights. The CRASH-B Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships (CRASH-B Sprints) was the world championship for indoor rowing, raced over a distance of 2,000m. The regatta is sponsored by Concept2, and raced on their C2 rowers. Originally held in Harvard's Newell Boathouse, the regatta moved in turn to the Malkin Athletic Center, the Radcliff Quadrangle Athletic Center, MIT's Rockwell Cage, Harvard's Indoor Track Facility, the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, Boston University's Agganis Arena, and in 2019, to the Boston University Track and Tennis Center. The regatta is held in late February each year. Competitors are 12 years old and up, including adaptive categories. In 2019 there was an age group for 90–94 years old. The race was started in 1980 by a group of US Olympic and World Team rowers. The CRASH-B Sprints are officially sponsored by Concept 2. Dick Dreissigacker
Richard Alan Dreissigacker (born March 26, 1947, in New Haven, Connecticut) is a former American Olympic rower and a founder of Concept2, a manufacturer of rowing equipment. While studying engineering at Brown University he took up rowing and went on to represent the United States at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Dreissigacker earned a Master of Science degree in 1974 from Stanford University, where he coached rowing and introduced his brother Pete to the sport. While training for the 1976 US Olympic team the brothers modified their oars with carbon fibre. After failing to be selected they started selling oars and started the company that is now Concept2. His wife Julia "Judy" Geer was a rower in the 1976 and 1984 Olympics, and his sister-in-law Charlotte "Carlie" Geer won a silver medal in single sculls in the 1984 Olympics. An indoor rower, or rowing machine, is a machine used to simulate the action of watercraft rowing for the purpose of exercise or training for rowing. Modern indoor rowers are known as ergometers (colloquially erg or ergo) because they measure work performed by the rower (that can be measured in ergs). Croker Oars
Croker Oars is an Australian manufacturer of Rowing (sport), rowing oars that was started by Howard Croker Order of Australia, OAM in Sydney, Australia. They are now manufactured on Taree, Oxley Island, Taree, on the banks of the lower Manning River, in New South Wales. During the 1950s, Croker and his two brothers were students at Newington College and their father was a rowing coach at the school. Howard Croker went on to be a successful rower in the 1960s, winning both State and National rowing titles. Croker rowed for the then UTS Haberfield Rowing Club, Haberfield Rowing Club at Dobroyd Point, New South Wales, Dobroyd Point and was a coach in the years 1975 and 1976 at The Scots College.
