Comarcas Of Andalusia
In Andalusia, comarcas have no defined administrative powers; many municipalities have gathered together to form ''mancomunidades'' in order to provide basic services, but those do not always coincide with the traditional ''comarcas''. The current (2007) Statute of Autonomy of Andalusia, unlike its 1981 predecessor, allows for the establishment and regulation of official ''comarcas'' under its Title III, Article 97, which defines the significance of ''comarcas'' and sets the basis for future legislation in this area. Comarcas
A ''comarca'' (, or , or ) is a traditional region or local administrative division found in Portugal, Spain and some of their former colonies, like Brazil, Nicaragua, and Panama. The term is derived from the term ''marca'', meaning a "march, mark", plus the prefix ''co''-, meaning "together, jointly". The ''comarca'' is known in Aragonese as ''redolada'' () and in Basque as ''eskualde'' (). In addition, in Galician, ''comarcas'' are also called ''bisbarras'' (). Although the English word "county" and its near synonym "shire" have similar meanings, they are usually translated into Spanish and Portuguese as ''condado'', a term which in the Iberian peninsula only refers to regions historically ruled by a ''conde'' (count or earl). However, "comarca" is occasionally used, with examples including the Spanish Wikipedia entry for "comarca" and some translations of The Lord of the Rings (see below). Alpujarra Granadina is a Spanish comarca in the Province of Granada. Along with Alpujarra Almeriense, it forms the historical region of the Alpujarras. Vélez-Málaga
Vélez-Málaga () is a municipality and the capital of the Axarquía comarca in the province of Málaga, in the Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia. It is the most important city in the comarca. Locally it is referred to as Vélez. Vélez-Málaga is the headquarters of the Commonwealth of Municipalities of Costa del Sol- Axarquía. The municipality forms part of the Costa del Sol region.
