Beerlegem
Beerlegem is a village belonging to the municipality of Zwalm. It is located in the Flemish Ardennes, the hilly southern part of the province of East Flanders, Belgium. Until 1970, it was an independent municipality. History During excavations in the 1950s and 1960s, a Merovingian graveyard was discovered containing 225 graves, and a unique wooden burial vault from the 11th or 12th century. The village was first mentioned as Berlengien in 1177, and used to belong to the Lands of Aalst. In 1682 the ''heerlijkheid'' was elevated to a barony. In 1970, the municipality was merged into Munkzwalm which in turn was merged into Zwalm in 1977. Castle Beerlegem is the location of an 18th-century Baroque castle, known as either Castle of Beerlegem or Castle Ten Bieze. The original castle was built in the 11th or 12th century. Bruno Tuybens (born 10 November 1961) is a Belgian politician and member of the sp.a. From 2002 until he became a secretary of state in 2005, Tuybens served as head of the sustainable and ethical investment division of the KBC Bank. In October 2005 Tuybens joined the Belgian federal government as Secretary of state for Public Enterprises, attached to the Minister of Budget, serving until December 2007 when Verhofstadt III took power. Between 1999 and 2003 Tuybens served as chairman of the Flemish division of Amnesty International. In August 2005 Tuybens was elected to the International Executive Committee of the organization. Brakel, Belgium
Brakel () is a Municipalities of Belgium, municipality in the Belgium, Belgian province of East Flanders in the Denderstreek and the Flemish Ardennes. The name is derived from a Carolingian villa ''Braglo'' first mentioned in 866 and located in the center of Opbrakel. Zingem () is a village and former municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprised the towns of Huise, Ouwegem and Zingem proper. In 2018, the municipality of Zingem had a total population of 7,552. The total area is 23.93 km2. Effective 1 January 2019, Kruishoutem and Zingem merged into the new municipality of Kruisem.
