Sophie Germain's Theorem
In number theory, Sophie Germain's theorem is a statement about the divisibility of solutions to the equation x^p + y^p = z^p of Fermat's Last Theorem for odd prime p. Formal statement Specifically, Sophie Germain proved that at least one of the numbers x, y, z must be divisible by p^2 if an auxiliary prime q can be found such that two conditions are satisfied: # No two nonzero p^ powers differ by one modulo q; and # p is itself not a p^ power modulo q. Conversely, the first case of Fermat's Last Theorem (the case in which p does not divide xyz) must hold for every prime p for which even one auxiliary prime can be found. Winifred Edgerton Merrill
Winifred Edgerton (September 24, 1862 – September 6, 1951) was born in Ripon, Wisconsin. She was the first woman to receive a degree from Columbia University and the first American woman to receive a PhD in mathematics.Kelly, S. E. and Rozner, S. A. The highest-scoring student is the Senior Wrangler, the second highest is the Second Wrangler, and so on. Charlotte Scott
Charlotte Angas Scott (8 June 1858 – 10 November 1931) was a British mathematician who made her career in the United States; she was influential in the development of American mathematics, including the mathematical education of women. Sofya Kovalevskaya
Sofya Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya (; born Korvin-Krukovskaya; – 10 February 1891) was a Russian mathematician who made noteworthy contributions to analysis, partial differential equations and mechanics. The Mathematical Tripos is the mathematics course that is taught in the Faculty of Mathematics, University of Cambridge, Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. Origin In its classical nineteenth-century form, the tripos was a distinctive written examination of undergraduate students of the University of Cambridge. Prior to 1824, the Mathematical Tripos was formally known as the "Senate House Examination". From about 1780 to 1909, the "Old Tripos" was distinguished by a number of features, including the publication of an order of merit of successful candidates, and the difficulty of the mathematical problems set for solution. Sarah Woodhead
Sarah Woodhead (1851–1912) was the first woman to take and pass a Tripos examination. In particular, she was the first woman to take, and to pass, the Mathematical Tripos exam, which she did in 1873. Education Woodhead’s family had long belonged to the Society of Friends, so she was able to attend Ackworth School, a Quaker school that accepted daughters of Friends as well as their sons. Woodhead later studied at Girton College, the first women's college to be founded at Oxford or Cambridge. As the physical college had yet to be built, she attended courses set up by Girton founder Emily Davies at Benslow House, Hitchin. In 1873, Woodhead took the same Mathematical Tripos examination as the male students, having already gained a first at Part I, and was classed equivalent to Senior Optime in mathematics. Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale (; 12 May 1820 – 13 August 1910) was an English Reform movement, social reformer, statistician and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale came to prominence while serving as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, in which she organised care for wounded soldiers at Constantinople.
