Maria Mitchell
Maria Mitchell ( ; August 1, 1818 – June 28, 1889) was an American astronomer, librarian, naturalist, and educator. In 1847, she discovered a comet named 1847 VI (modern designation C/1847 T1) that was later known as " Miss Mitchell's Comet" in her honor. She won a gold medal prize for her discovery, which was presented to her by King Christian VIII of Denmark in 1848. Mitchell was the first internationally known woman to work as both a professional astronomer and a professor of astronomy after accepting a position at Vassar College in 1865. She was also the first woman elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Mitchell is the namesake of the Maria Mitchell Association, the Maria Mitchell Observatory, and the Maria Mitchell Aquarium. Alice Archenhold
Alice Archenhold (''née'' Markus; 27 August 1874 – 9 February 1943) was a German astronomer whose husband was fellow astronomer Friedrich Simon Archenhold. Alice Markus was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, and married Friedrich Simon Archenhold in July 1897 and lived in Berlin. They went on to have five children together. Her sons, Günter, who became an astronomer, and Horst, both fled to England, but Alice was arrested and deported (along with her daughter Hilde) to Theresienstadt concentration camp, in Czechoslovakia, where she died on 9 February 1943. She is commemorated on her husband's grave at the Zentralfriedhof Friedrichsfelde, Berlin. Stefi Baum
Stefi Baum (born December 11, 1958, in Chicago, Illinois) is an American astronomer. The American Astronomical Society honored her work by awarding her the Annie J. Cannon Prize in 1993. Baum helped to develop the Hubble Space Telescope and, starting in 2004, was the director of Rochester Institute of Technology’s Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science. Early life Baum was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 11, 1958. She is the daughter of mathematician Leonard Baum. She attended Princeton Public High School in Princeton, New Jersey, and graduated in 1976. Baum received her Bachelor of Arts in physics from Harvard University and graduated with distinction, and a PhD in astronomy from the University of Maryland. She is currently the dean of the Faculty of Science and professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Manitoba. Natalie Batalha
Natalie M. Batalha (born May 14, 1966) is professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at UC Santa Cruz. Previously she was a research astronomer in the Space Sciences Division of NASA Ames Research Center and held the position of Science Team Lead (2010 - 2012), Mission Scientist (2012 - 2016), and Project Scientist (2016 - 2018) on the Kepler Mission, the first mission capable of finding Earth-size planets around other stars. Before moving to NASA, Batalha was a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at San Jose State University (2002 - 2012). Sarbani Basu
Sarbani Basu is an Indian astrophysicist and Professor at Yale University. She is on the board of directors of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Education Basu earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Madras in 1986. She completed her graduate studies at the Savitribai Phule Pune University and University of Mumbai, gaining her PhD in 1993. Research In 1993 Basu joined Queen Mary University of London as a postdoctoral researcher, before moving to the Aarhus University. She won the 1996 ''M. K. Amy Barr Mlinar is an American planetary geophysicist known for her studies of icy body formation. She is a member of the National Academies Standing Committee on Astrobiology and Planetary Science and a co-investigator on NASA's Europa Imaging System and REASON instruments. Early life and education Born Amy Barr in Palo Alto, California, she attended Caltech for her undergraduate degree, earning a bachelor's degree in planetary science in 2000. Amy Barger
Amy J. Barger (born January 18, 1971) is an American astronomer and Henrietta Leavitt Professor of Astronomy at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She is considered a pioneer in combining data from multiple telescopes to monitor multiple wavelengths and in discovering distant galaxies and supermassive black holes, which are outside of the visible spectrum. Barger is an active member of the International Astronomical Union. Education and career Barger earned a Bachelor of Arts in astronomy-physics in 1993 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was a Marshall scholar at King's College, University of Cambridge and received a doctor of philosophy in astronomy from the university in 1997. Beatriz Barbuy
Beatriz Leonor Silveira Barbuy is a Brazilian astrophysicist. She was described in 2009 by '' Época'' magazine as one of the 100 most influential Brazilians. She is a professor at the Instituto de Astronomia, Geofísica e Ciências Atmosféricas (IAG) at the University of São Paulo, vice-president of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), and one of five winners of the L'Oréal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science in 2009. Career Barbuy completed undergraduate and master's degrees at the University of São Paulo in the early 1970s. Kirsten Banks
Kirsten Alexandra Banks is an Indigenous Australian astrophysicist and science communicator of the Wiradjuri people, known for her work in promoting mainstream and Aboriginal astronomy. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of New South Wales in 2018, and worked at the Sydney Observatory. Career Banks is a Wiradjuri woman who grew up on Ku-ring-gai country in Sydney's Northern Beaches and graduated from Davidson High School in 2014. During primary school, Banks was interested in meteorology but always had a fascination with the stars and planets. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from University of New South Wales (UNSW) in 2018 and started working as an Astronomy Guide at the Sydney Observatory. Odette Bancilhon
Odette Bancilhon (22 September 1908 – 1998) was a French astronomer. She is best known for her work during the 1930s and 1940s at the Algiers Observatory, in Algeria, North Africa, where she discovered 1333 Cevenola, a stony Eunomian asteroid from the main-belt. Life and work Bancilhon was a graduate in science and she served as a meteorological assistant in Algiers for one year beginning 1 December 1932. On 7 December 1933, she was appointed as Alfred Schmitt's replacement while he performed his military service. In that capacity, in 1934, she discovered the asteroid (1333) Cevenola. (All of her publications at that time were signed ''O. Bancilhon'', a practice of her profession.) She was named an assistant on 1 November 1937.
