Wymondham
Wymondham ( ) is a market town and civil parishes in England, civil parish in the South Norfolk district of Norfolk, England. It lies on the River Tiffey, south-west of Norwich and just off the A11 road (England), A11 road to London. The parish, one of Norfolk's largest, includes rural areas to the north and south, with hamlets of Suton, Silfield, Spooner Row and Wattlefield. It had a population of 14,405 in 2011, of whom 13,587 lived in the town itself. Development The community developed during the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain, Anglo-Saxon period and expanded with the establishment of a Wymondham Abbey, priory in 1107 and a market in 1204. Windham is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 18,434 at the 2020 census. It includes the villages of South Windham and North Windham. It is part of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford metropolitan area. History The township was granted in 1734 by the Massachusetts General Court to Abraham Howard, Joseph Blaney and 58 others from Marblehead, Massachusetts. In 1737, New Marblehead Plantation was settled by Captain Thomas Chute. By order of the Massachusetts General Court, a fort was built in spring of 1744 on a hill in the southern part of town near the early center of settlement to offer protection during King George's War. A 50-foot square blockhouse, constructed of 12-inch thick hewn hemlock had an overhanging second story, with firing ports and two swivel guns in watch posts on diagonal corners. Windham William Sadler
Windham William Sadler (1796 – 30 September 1824) was an English balloonist. His father was aviation pioneer James Sadler (balloonist), James Sadler and, after an education in engineering, Sadler followed in his father's footsteps. He made an ascent in London during the Grand Jubilee of 1814 and in 1817 made the first successful aerial crossing of the Irish Sea, a feat that had been unsuccessfully attempted by his father. Sadler was killed when his balloon crashed into a chimney near Blackburn during a flight in 1824. Early life and engineering career Sadler was born in Pimlico, London, on 17 October 1796. William Windham (rower)
William Ashe Dymoke Windham (2 April 1926 – 5 January 2021) was a British rower who competed for Great Britain in the 1952 Summer Olympics. Biography Born in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, on 2 April 1926, Windham was educated at Bedford School and Christ's College, Cambridge. In 1947 and 1951 he was a member of the winning Cambridge boat in the Boat Race. He rowed for England in the Empire Games in 1950, for Great Britain in the European Rowing Championships in 1950 and 1951, winning a bronze medal in 1950 and a gold medal in 1951, and for Great Britain at the 1952 Summer Olympics. He was elected as a Steward of the Henley Royal Regatta in 1953, was a member of the Committee of Management of the Henley Royal Regatta between 1972 and 1994, and was High Sheriff of Powys between 1996 and 1997. He is the defensive coordinator and safeties coach for the University of South Alabama, positions he has held since 2024.
