Wincanton Racecourse
Wincanton Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located in Wincanton, Somerset, England. The Steeplechase (horse racing), steeplechase fences are large, making it a good test of a chaser. Three fences in quick succession in the second half of the home-straight make for exciting racing and often change the complexion of a finish dramatically; resulting in a great many close finishes. The track stages several big races, including the Kingwell Hurdle in February. The CGA Chase (previously the Jim Ford Challenge Cup, last run in 2012) was run on the same day; these races were significant trials for the Champion Hurdle and Cheltenham Gold Cup respectively. Several of the races at the course were shown on Channel 4 and are now occasionally shown on ITV (TV network), ITV. Cheltenham Gold Cup
The Cheltenham Gold Cup is a Grade 1 National Hunt horse race run on the New Course at Cheltenham Racecourse in England, over a distance of about 3 miles 2½ furlongs (3 miles 2 furlongs and 70 yards, or 5,294 m), and during its running there are 22 fences to be jumped. The race takes place each year during the Cheltenham Festival in March. The steeplechase, which is open to horses aged five years and over, is the most prestigious of all National Hunt events and it is sometimes referred to as the ''Blue Riband'' of jump-racing. The Rising Stars Novices' Chase is a Grade 2 National Hunt steeplechase in Great Britain which is open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Wincanton over a distance of about 2 miles and 4 furlongs (2 miles 4 furlongs and 35 yards, or 4,055 metres), and during its running there are seventeen fences to be jumped. The race is for novice chasers, and it is scheduled to take place each year in early November. The race was first run in 1990 and was initially held at Chepstow, where it was contested over 2 miles and 3½ furlongs in February. It was switched to be run in November from 1994. The race was transferred to Wincanton and extended to its present length in 2004. The Elite Hurdle is a Grade 2 National Hunt hurdle race in Great Britain which is open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Wincanton over a distance of about 1 mile and 7 furlongs (1 mile 7 furlongs and 50 yards, or 3,063 metres), and during its running there are eight hurdles to be jumped. The race is scheduled to take place each year in early November. The event was established in 1992, and it was initially held at Cheltenham. It was originally contested over 2 miles and 110 yards. The Badger Beer Handicap Chase is a Premier Handicap National Hunt steeplechase in England which is open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Wincanton over a distance of about 3 miles and 1 furlongs (3 miles, 1 furlong and 30 yards, or 5,029 metres), and during its running there are twenty-one fences to be jumped. It is a limited handicap race, and it is scheduled to take place each year in November. The race was established in 1963. The first running took place in March 1963, but then moved to an October/November date. It was awarded Listed status in 2003. Paul Nicholls (horse Racing)
Paul Frank Nicholls (born 17 April 1962) is a British National Hunt horse trainer with stables at Ditcheat, Somerset. A relatively successful jump jockey, Nicholls has become the leading National Hunt trainer of his generation in Britain, finishing the 2007–08 season with 155 winners and a record £4 million in prize money. As of April 2023, he has trained over 3,500 winners, won the 2012 Grand National, four Cheltenham Gold Cups and has been crowned British jump racing Champion Trainer fourteen times. Early life and education The son of a policeman, Nicholls was educated at Marlwood School, Alveston before leaving at 16 to take up work in a local point-to-point yard. Wincanton
Wincanton ( or ) is a town and electoral ward in Somerset, southwest England. The town lies off the A303 road, a main route between London and South West England, and has some light industry. In the 2021 census the civil parish had a population of 6,568. Etymology The name of Wincanton is first attested in 1084, in the forms ''Wincainietone'' and ''Wincautone''. In the Domesday Book of 1086, the name is spelled ''Wincaleton''. The town's name comes from the name of the River Cale, which runs through the town and was in Old English called ''Wincawel'', combined with the Old English word ''tūn'', "estate, settlement". It thus once meant "estate on the River Cale". The origin of the name of the River Cale itself is less clear. It is first attested in a fourteenth-century copy of a charter from 956, where it appears in the forms ''Cawel'' and ''Wricawel'', the latter of which is agreed to be a scribal error for ''*Wincawel''.
