Sinhala ( ; Sinhala: , , ), sometimes called Sinhalese ( ), is an Indo-Aryan language primarily spoken by the Sinhalese people of Sri Lanka, who make up the largest ethnic group on the island, numbering about 16 million. Arthur Wijewardena
Sir Edwin Arthur Lewis Wijewardena, KC (21 March 1887 – 1964) was the 28th Chief Justice of Ceylon. Educated at Ananda College, Colombo and S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, Wijewardena graduated from University of Cambridge and qualified as a barrister. On his return to Ceylon he became an advocate. He took the entrance exam for the Ceylon Civil Service and passed, but was not admitted to failing the medical exam. He served as the solicitor general of Ceylon from 1936 to 1938 and was appointed King's Counsel. Appointed to the Supreme Court, Wijewardena was appointed Chief Justice in 1949 succeeding the acting Francis Soertsz and was Chief Justice until 1950. He was succeeded by Edward Jayetileke. Deshamanya Philip Revatha Wijewardene, better known as Ray Wijewardene, ( Sinhala:පිලිප් රෙවත විජයවර්ධන) (20 August 1924 - 18 August 2010) was a Sri Lankan engineer, aviator, inventor, and Olympic athlete. He was an expert on tropical agriculture and natural resource management, subjects that he created a logical system to study. He invented devices to assist small farmers in developing countries. Tyron Hirantha Wijewardene (born 29 August 1961), is a Sri Lankan cricket umpire and former cricketer. He was elected to the International Panel of Umpires and Referees as Sri Lanka's second umpire. As a cricketer, Wijewardene was a left-handed bowler, taking 9 wickets in his 5 First-class appearances for Saracens Sports Club in 1990/91. He was also a useful lower order batsman, getting one half-century having batted in just 5 innings. He was the founder and chairman of Upali Group, the first multi-national business in Sri Lanka. Upali Group has businesses in the United States, US, United Kingdom, UK, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong. Vimala Wijewardene (Vimala; ''née'' Silva; 7 August 1908 – 27 January 1994) was a Ceylonese politician and the country's first female cabinet minister. Marriage and family Following the death of her older sister, Vimala married her sister's widower Don Charles Wijewardene (1892-1956) at age eighteen. He was the fifth son of Don Philip Tudugala Wijewardene; a timber merchant of Sedavatta and Helena Dep (''née'' Weerasinghe) and the younger brother of newspaper magnate Don Richard. They had three children; Ananda, Padmini, and Rukmini. Don Charles helped unite the Sangha in support of the restoration of independence in Ceylon.
