Whitbread is a British multinational hotel and restaurant company headquartered in Houghton Regis, England. The business was founded as a brewery in 1742 by Samuel Whitbread in partnership with Godfrey and Thomas Shewell, with premises in London at the junction of Old Street and Upper Whitecross Street, along with a brewery in Brick Lane, Spitalfields. Samuel Whitbread bought out his partners, expanding into porter production with the purchase of a brewery in Chiswell Street, and the company had become the largest brewery in the world by the 1780s. Its largest division is currently Premier Inn, which is the largest hotel brand in the UK with over 785 hotels and 72,000 rooms. Until January 2019 it owned Costa Coffee but sold it to The Coca-Cola Company. Whitbread's brands include the restaurant chains Beefeater, Brewers Fayre and Table Table. Whitecross Street
Whitecross Street is a short street in London Borough of Islington, Islington, in Inner London. It features an eponymous street market and a large housing estate. Since 2010, there has been an annual Whitecross Street Party one weekend in the summer, together with an exhibition of street art. Location The street is located in St Luke's, Islington. John Edmund Martineau
John Edmund Martineau (1904 – 3 June 1982) was an English brewer and brewing executive, who served as President of the Institute of Brewing. Life and family background John Edmund Martineau was born in 1904, the eldest son of brewer Maurice Richard Martineau (1870 - 1943), of Walsham-le-Willows in Suffolk. In 1936, he married Catherine Makepeace Thackeray, (1911–1995), second daughter of William Thackeray Dennis Ritchie (1880–1964), of Woodend House in Marlow, Durham, a descendant of William Makepeace Thackeray. Samuel Whitbread (1764–1815)
Samuel Whitbread (18 January 1764 – 6 July 1815) was a British politician. The heir of a wealthy brewer, he was a staunch Whig sitting in Parliament from 1790 to his death. Shortly after the Battle of Waterloo he committed suicide, having been very sympathetic to the defeated French emperor Napoleon. The Gin Craze was a period in the first half of the 18th century when the consumption of gin increased rapidly in Great Britain, especially in London. Daniel Defoe commented: "the Distillers have found out a way to hit the palate of the Poor, by their new fashion'd compound Waters called Geneva, so that the common People seem not to value the French-brandy as usual, and even not to desire it".
