Vinje is a municipality in Telemark county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Vest-Telemark which is part of Øvre Telemark. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Åmot. Other villages in the municipality include Arabygdi, Edland, Grunge, Haukeli, Krossen, Møsstrond, Nesland, Øyfjell, Raulandsgrend, and Vinje. The municipality is the 14th largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. Vinje is the 209th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 3,832. The municipality's population density is and its population has increased by 3% over the previous 10-year period. Vinje Church (Telemark)
Vinje Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Vinje Municipality in Telemark county, Norway. It is located in the village of Vinje. It is one of the churches for the ''Vinje og Nesland'' parish which is part of the Øvre Telemark prosti ( deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The red, wooden church was built in a cruciform design in 1796 using plans drawn up by the architect Jarand Rønjom. The church seats about 235 people. History The first church in Vinje was a wooden stave church that was built sometime between 1185 and 1202 (during the reign of King Sverre of Norway). The dating of the church is based on an inscription in the church, along with the general style of the design of the building. The runic inscription says which means "Sigurd Jarlsson carved these runes on the Saturday after 'Botolvsmesse' 7 June when he fled here and did not want to settle with Sverre, who murdered his father and brothers." Vest-Telemark () is a traditional district in Norway. The area comprises the western areas of the larger region known as Upper Telemark () in Vestfold og Telemark county. The region consists of six municipalities: Fyresdal, Tokke, Vinje, Nissedal, Kviteseid, and Seljord. In 2020, there were 13,903 residents in the region. Møsstrond
Møsstrond is a small island village in Vinje Municipality in Telemark county, Norway. The village is located on the island Hovdeøyi which lies in the lake Møsvatn, high up in the mountains just east of Hardangervidda National Park. The village is located on the southern part of the island and it is very rural and isolated. The village has no road connections and is only accessible by boat.
