Verily Life Sciences LLC, also known as Verily (formerly Google Life Sciences), is Alphabet Inc.'s research organization devoted to the study of life sciences. The organization was formerly a division of Google X, until August 10, 2015, when Sergey Brin announced that the organization would become an independent subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. with restructuring completed on October 2, 2015. On December 7, 2015, Google Life Sciences was renamed Verily. As of 2025, Verily is the first “bet” to successfully divest from Google and is now operating as a standalone company under Alphabet. Baseline Study
Project Baseline is a broad effort to map human health led by Verily Life Sciences (formerly Google Life Sciences), Alphabet, Inc.'s health sciences division, and was announced in the Wall Street Journal on July 24, 2014. It begins with the Project Baseline Study, which will collect phenotypic health data from approximately 10,000 participants over the course of at least four years. The project employs experts from widely varying fields including science, medicine, user experience and design, engineering and patient advocacy. The project is not the first one to aim to collect data on many individuals for medical purposes, but it aims to collect a much larger amount of data covering a broader array of topics than its predecessors. Stephen Gillett
Stephen Gillett (born January 20, 1976) is an American businessman, entrepreneur and technology leader. He is currently the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Verily, formerly Google Life Sciences. He was Chief Executive Officer of Chronicle Security, an Alphabet company born out of X, the moonshot factory and founded in 2016. Gillett is also an active adviser at X (formerly GoogleX). Early life and education Gillett was born in Los Angeles, California. He is of Lebanese descent, his father being from Tripoli, Lebanon. Google Contact Lens
Google Contact Lens was a smart contact lens project announced by Google on 16 January 2014. The project aimed to assist people with diabetes by constantly measuring the glucose levels in their tears. The project was being carried out by Verily and as of 2014 was being tested using prototypes. On November 16, 2018, Verily announced it had discontinued the project. Design The lens consists of a wireless chip and a miniaturized glucose sensor. A tiny pinhole in the lens allows for tear fluid to seep into the sensor to measure blood sugar levels. Both of the sensors are embedded between two soft layers of lens material. The electronics lie outside of both the pupil and the iris so there is no damage to the eye. Liftware
Liftware is a brand name for a spoon designed to counteract the tremor associated with medical conditions such as Parkinson's disease or essential tremors. The company which designed the projects, Lift Labs, was founded by Anupam Pathak, a University of Michigan Ph.D. student. Data is sourced from national business registries in 140 jurisdictions, and presented in a standardised form. Continuous Glucose Monitoring
A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is a device for monitoring blood glucose continuously instead of monitoring periodically by drawing a drop of blood from a finger. This is known as continuous glucose monitoring. CGMs are used by people who treat their diabetes with insulin, for example people with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, or other types of diabetes, such as gestational diabetes. A continuous glucose monitor has three parts: * a small electrode that is placed under the skin * a transmitter that sends readings from the electrode to a receiver at regular intervals (every 1 to 15 minutes) * a separate receiver that shows the glucose level on a display.
