The Vale of Rheidol Railway () is a Narrow gauge railway, narrow gauge heritage railway in Ceredigion, Wales, between Aberystwyth and Devil's Bridge, Ceredigion, Devil's Bridge; a journey of . It opened in 1902 and, from the Withdrawal of steam on British Rail, withdrawal of main line steam on British Rail in 1968 until privatisation in 1989, it was the sole steam-operated line on the Transport Act 1947, 1948 nationalised British Rail network. It was one of the first parts of British Rail to be privatised. Unlike most other preserved railways in the United Kingdom, the Vale of Rheidol Railway did not have a period of closure between its being part of the national rail system and becoming a heritage railway, and so has operated a continuous service for residents and tourists. Devil's Bridge Railway Station
Devil's Bridge railway station is a railway station serving Devil's Bridge, Ceredigion, Devil's Bridge in Ceredigion in Mid-Wales. It is the eastern terminus of the preserved Vale of Rheidol Railway. Facilities The station has two platforms although one has been disused for many years. Following developments during 2012 and 2013, funded by the European Union, there is now a raised platform, improving access on and off carriages. The two platform lines both terminate in buffer stops, and each has a headshunt forward of bi-directional cross-over railway points, points for locomotive release. There used to be a siding, but this has now been re-laid as a demonstration line, running around the perimeter of the site and physically separate from the main running line. Under British Rail ownership, the passing loops at Capel Bangor and Aberffrwd were removed and so passenger trains used to cross at Devil's Bridge and it was not uncommon to see three trains at Devil's Bridge at once. ...

Afon Rheidol (; also known as the River Rheidol) is a river in Ceredigion, Wales, in length. The source is Plynlimon. Receiving an average annual rainfall of , Plynlimon is also the source of both the Wye and the Severn. Geography and geology Originally formed at the confluence of the Afon Hengwm and Afon Llechwedd-mawr, the Rheidol now emerges as the outflow of Nant-y-moch Reservoir on the western flanks of Plynlimon, near the sources of the Wye and Severn. The Ffestiniog Railway () is a heritage railway based on Narrow-gauge railway, narrow-gauge, located in Gwynedd, Wales. It is a major tourist attraction located mainly within the Snowdonia#Snowdonia National Park, Snowdonia National Park. Davies and Metcalfe Ltd is a railway equipment and locomotive manufacturer from Romiley, Manchester, England. It was founded in Aberystwyth in 1878. The company is now owned and run by Richard Charles Metcalfe and they continue to manufacture steam locomotive and traction engine parts from original drawings, as well as modern railway parts worldwide. History Rheidol Foundry James Metcalfe (1847–1920) was apprenticed to Sharp Stewart and worked for the company until 1867 before joining the Manchester and Milford Railway at Aberystwyth as locomotive foreman. Rheidol (locomotive)
''Rheidol'', formerly named ''Treze de Maio'' and ''Talybont'', was a steam locomotive built by W.G. Bagnall in Staffordshire, England, in 1896. Originally built to a gauge of , it was for a Brazilian sugar plantation, however the order was cancelled before it was exported. The locomotive was then regauged and renamed for the -gauge Plynlimon and Hafan Tramway, in Wales, where it worked from August 1897 until 1899. It was then regauged and renamed a second time for -gauge Vale of Rheidol Railway, in 1900. It worked on the Vale of Rheidol until 1924, when it was scrapped. Construction The locomotive was originally built by W. G. Bagnall in 1896, following an order for a gauge locomotive for a sugar plantation in Brazil. The locomotive was named ''Treze de Maio'' ( Portuguese for "Thirteenth of May"), the date in 1888 that Brazil abolished slavery.
