United States Army Field Manuals
United States Army Field Manuals are published by the United States Army's Army Publishing Directorate. They contain detailed information and how-tos for procedures important to soldiers serving in the field. As of July 2007, some 542 field manuals were in use. Starting in 2010, the U.S. Army began review and revision of all of its doctrinal publications, under the initiative "Doctrine 2015". Since then, the most important doctrine have been published in Army Doctrine Publications (ADP) and Army Doctrine Reference Publications (ADRP), replacing the former key Field Manuals. Army Techniques Publications (ATP), Army Training Circulars (TC), and Army Technical Manuals (TM) round out the new suite of doctrinal publications. Not all FMs are being rescinded; 50 select Field Manuals will continue to be published, periodically reviewed and revised. They are usually available to the public at low cost or free electronically. The United States Army Special Operations Command (Airborne) (USASOC) is the command charged with overseeing the various special operations forces of the United States Army. Headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, it is the largest component of the United States Special Operations Command. It is an Army Service Component Command. List Of Numbered Documents Of The United States Department Of War
From 1896 to 1929, the United States Department of War gave their publications a successive number, like other departments including the Department of Agriculture and Department of the Treasury. They were mostly (drill) regulations and other field manuals (as they were later called, when the War Department adopted the FM Field Manual numbering), but also collections of military laws or descriptions of countries of military interest and campaigns or battles. Only a few Technical Manuals (TM's) (as they were later called) are included in this series. These publications were mainly printed by the Government Printing Office, but also by some other printers. Graphic Training Aids
Graphic training aids (GTAs) are publications that assist during the conduct of training and the process of learning. Current Training Aids come in different forms, including models, displays, slides, books, pictures and media presentations. During World War II, Graphic Training Aids were in high demand. Large quantities of young men were recruited which demanded a higher rate of training. A large replica of an M1 Garand rifle would be presented in front of a class. During his presentation, the trainer would use it as a reference. Printed media was also used in the form of exploded view drawings, which depicted various parts of rifles. A curious form of a Graphic Training Aid was used during the Vietnam War, in the form of a comic book. FM 100-5
Field Manual 100-5 (FM100-5) is a serial publication of the US Army. In 1997, the 1986 edition was termed "the primary tool for the self-education and professional development required to achieve tactical competence." In 1939 it was said to contain the principles of troop leading and combat of the combined arms in maneuver warfare and constitutes the basis of instruction of all arms and services for field service. History FM100-5 was published on 1 October 1939 by newly-hired Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall. It was updated again in 1941 after the Blitzkrieg of General Guderian had been digested. It was republished by Marshall on 15 June 1944, and then again in 1949. William DePuy signed off on the 1976 edition. DePuy supervised the Army's effort to learn lessons from the Yom Kippur War. Abu Ghraib Torture And Prisoner Abuse
During the early stages of the Iraq War, members of the United States Army and the Central Intelligence Agency were accused of a series of human rights violations and war crimes against detainees in the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. These abuses included physical abuse, Sexual abuse, sexual humiliation, physical and psychological torture, and rape, as well as the killing of Manadel al-Jamadi and the desecration of his body. The abuses came to public attention with the publication of photographs by CBS News in April 2004, causing shock and outrage and receiving widespread condemnation within the United States and internationally. Classified Information
Classified information is confidential material that a government deems to be sensitive information which must be protected from unauthorized disclosure that requires special handling and dissemination controls. Access is restricted by law or regulation to particular groups of individuals with the necessary security clearance with a need to know. A formal security clearance is required to view or handle classified material. The clearance process requires a satisfactory background investigation. Documents and other information must be properly marked "by the author" with one of several (hierarchical) levels of sensitivity—e.g. Confidential (C), Secret (S), and Top Secret (S). The US Army Field Manual on Interrogation, sometimes known by the military nomenclature FM 34-52, is a 177-page manual describing to military interrogators how to conduct effective interrogations while conforming with US and international law. Army Physical Fitness Test
The Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) was a test designed to measure the muscular strength, muscular endurance, endurance, and Circulatory system, cardiovascular respiratory fitness of soldiers in the United States Army. The test contained three events: Press up, push-ups, sit-up (exercise), sit-ups, and a run with a soldier scoring from 0 to 100 points in each event based on performance. A minimum score of 60 in each event was required to pass the test. The APFT is timed as follows: * 2 minutes of pushups * 2 minutes of situps * 2-mile run Active component and Active Guard Reserve (AGR) component Soldiers were required to take a "record" (meaning for official records) APFT at least twice each calendar year. Urban Warfare
Urban warfare is warfare in urban areas such as towns and cities. Urban combat differs from combat in the open at both Military operation, operational and the Military tactics, tactical levels. Complicating factors in urban warfare include the presence of civilians and the complexity of the urban terrain. Urban combat operations may be conducted to capitalize on strategic or tactical advantages associated with the possession or the control of a particular urban area or to deny these advantages to the enemy. It is considered to be arguably the most difficult form of warfare. Fighting in urban areas negates the advantages that one side may have over the other in armor, heavy artillery, or air support. Combatives
Combatives is the term used to describe the hand-to-hand combat systems primarily used by members of the military, law enforcement, or other groups such as security personnel or correctional officers. Combatives are based in martial arts but are not themselves distinct disciplines. The US Modern Army Combatives Program was adopted as the basis for the US Air Force Combatives Program in January 2008. Combatives training has also been provided outside of the United States military, for example at Kansas State University which provided a training programme for years before closing it in 2010.
