Uintan
The Uintan North American Stage is the North American faunal stage, typically set from 46,200,000 to 42,000,000 years before present lasting 4.2 million years. The Uintan Stage is a key part of the North American land mammal age, North American Land Mammal Age. In the Uinta Basin, a thriving subtropical ecosystem was formed at around 46.0 million years ago. It falls within the Eocene epoch, preceded by the Bridgerian and followed by the Duchesnean NALMA stages. The Uinta Formation is a key piece of this geologic stage. Mammalian Machairodontinae, sabretooths evolved and became dominant predators in the now-Western United States. These included ''Apataelurus'', ''Diegoaelurus,'' and ''Machaeroides''. Apataelurus
''Apataelurus'' ("false cat") is an extinct genus of saber-toothed placental mammals from the extinct family Oxyaenidae, that lived in North America and East Asia from the early to middle Eocene, 48-40 million years ago. This genus was defined by teeth that were well-adapted to a carnivorous diet. A distinct feature described was a long upper canine tooth that resembled a saber tooth. There are two species currently described: ''Apataelurus kayi'', the type species, and ''Apataelurus pishigouensis'', discovered in 1986. As a large, leopard-sized predator, ''Apataelurus'' dominated the Uinta Formation area. It was adapted to taking on large prey with more struggling motion tolerant muscles in its mouth, allowing it to attack large prey that would fight back. Diegoaelurus
''Diegoaelurus'' ("San Diego's cat") is an extinct genus of placental mammals from the extinct subfamily Machaeroidinae within extinct family Oxyaenidae. This genus contains only one species ''Diegoaelurus vanvalkenburghae'', which was found in the Santiago Formation in California. This mammal lived during the Uintan stage of the Middle Eocene Epoch around 46.2 to 39.7 million years ago. Etymology The name of genus ''Diegoaelurus'' comes from city San Diego and . ''Diegoaelurus vanvalkenburghae'' was named after Dr. Blaire Van Valkenburgh in honor of her research on carnivorous mammals and saber-toothed predator paleoecology. Discovery The holotype fossils were discovered in Oceanside, San Diego county by paleontologist Brad Riney in 1988. The Bridgerian North American Stage on the geologic timescale is the North American faunal stage according to the North American Land Mammal Ages chronology (NALMA), typically set from 50,300,000 to 46,200,000 years BP lasting . It is usually considered to overlap the Ypresian and Lutetian within the Eocene epoch. The Bridgerian is preceded by the Wasatchian and followed by the Uintan NALMA stages. The North American land mammal ages (NALMA) establishes a geologic timescale for North American fauna beginning during the Late Cretaceous and continuing through to the present. These periods are referred to as ages or intervals (or stages when referring to the rock strata of that age) and were established using geographic place names where fossil materials were obtained. ''Machaeroides'' ("dagger-like") is an extinct genus of sabre-toothed predatory placental mammals from extinct subfamily Machaeroidinae within extinct family Oxyaenidae, that lived in North America (Wyoming) from the early to middle Eocene.
