Ufology
Ufology, sometimes written UFOlogy ( or ), is the investigation of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) by people who believe that they may be of extraordinary claims, extraordinary origins (most frequently of extraterrestrial hypothesis, extraterrestrial alien visitors). Unidentified Flying Object
An unidentified flying object (UFO) is an object or phenomenon seen in the sky but not yet identified or explained. The term was coined when United States Air Force (USAF) investigations into flying saucers found too broad a range of shapes reported to consider them all saucers or discs. UFOs are also known as unidentified aerial phenomena or unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP). Flying Saucer
A flying saucer, or flying disc, is a purported type of disc-shaped unidentified flying object (UFO). The term was coined in 1947 by the United States (US) news media for the objects pilot Kenneth Arnold UFO sighting, Kenneth Arnold claimed flew alongside his airplane above Washington (state), Washington State. Newspapers reported Arnold's story with speed estimates implausible for aircraft of the period. The story preceded 1947 flying disc craze, a wave of hundreds of sightings across the United States, including the Roswell incident and the Flight 105 UFO sighting. Extraterrestrial Hypothesis
The extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH; ''synonymous with'' interplanetary aircraft ) proposes that some unidentified flying objects (UFOs) are best explained as being physical spacecraft occupied by intelligent extraterrestrial organisms ( non-human aliens) from other planets, or probes designed by extraterrestrials. Usage of the term The term ''extraterrestrial hypothesis'' in printed material was used by Janine and Jacques Vallée in their 1966 book. GEIPAN
GEIPAN (an acronym in French for , or Unidentified Aerospace Phenomenon Research and Information Group) () is a unit of the French space agency CNES based in Toulouse, whose brief is to investigate unidentified aerospace phenomena (UAP) and make its findings available to the public. History and developments GEIPAN was founded in 1977 as GEPAN (, Study Group for Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena). Claude Poher was the inaugural director, of then director general of CNES Yves Sillard. GEPAN was renamed to SEPRA (, Atmospheric Re-entry Phenomena Expertise Department) in 1988, and then to ("rare aerospace phenomena expertise department") in 2000.
