Syrinx Aruanus
''Syrinx aruanus'', common name the Australian trumpet or false trumpet, is a species of extremely large sea snail measuring up to 75 cm long and weighing up to 18 kg. It is a marine (ocean), marine gastropod mollusk in the family Turbinellidae, and is the only species in the genus ''Syrinx''. This is the largest Extant taxon, extant snail (shelled gastropod) species in the world, and arguably the largest (heaviest) gastropod in the world. Although the gastropod shell, shell itself is quite well known to Shell Collecting, shell collectors because of its extraordinary size, little is known about the ecology and behavior of the species, except for one study about its feeding habits. Taxonomy In 1681, Filippo Bonanni depicted this species in one of the first books ever published that was solely about seashells. The book was entitled: ''"Ricreatione dell' occhio e dela mente nell oservation' delle Chiociolle, proposta a' curiosi delle opere della natura, &c."'' The ta ...

Turbinella Pyrum
''Turbinella pyrum'', common names the chank shell, sacred chank or chank, also known as the divine conch or referred to simply as a conch, is a species of very large sea snail with a gill and an operculum, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Turbinellidae. This species occurs in the Indian Ocean. The name "chank" for the shell of this species is derived from the Indian word ''shankha'', the divine conch. The old generic name was ''Xancus''. The Dutch used to call them ''chianco''. Distribution This species is found mainly in the Indian Ocean. Hystrivasum Horridum
''Hystrivasum horridum'', common name the rough or shaggy vase, is a fossil species of medium-sized predatory gastropod in the family Turbinellidae. This species is extinct and is found in the Pleistocene deposits of Florida. Etymology The specific name ''horridum'' is Latin for "rough" or "shaggy" and does not mean "horrid". Shell description Like other species in the subfamily Vasinae, ''Hystrivasum horridum'' shells are large, thick and heavy. They are vase-shaped, in the sense that they are biconical. The shells have moderate spires, and have several plaits on the columella. ''Hystrivasum horridum'', formerly ''Vasum horridum'', belongs to an extinct group that is easily distinguished from modern ''Vasum'' by the presence of two sets of spines or nodes located on the shoulder of the whorls. These spines can be found at the suture and at the periphery of the shoulder. ''H. horridum'' has 12-15 wide, scoop-like spines that project almost horizontally from the shoulder. ...
