1999–2000 South-West Indian Ocean Cyclone Season
The 1999–2000 South-West Indian Ocean tropical cyclone season was the first on record in which two storms – Cyclone Leon–Eline, Leon–Eline and Cyclone Hudah, Hudah – struck Mozambique at tropical cyclone scales#South-West Indian Ocean, tropical cyclone intensity, or with maximum sustained winds of at least . The most notable storm of the season was Eline, which was the third longest-lasting storm on record in the basin. It lasted for 29 days while traversing the southern Indian Ocean, making the strongest landfall in decades along eastern Madagascar in late February. Cyclone Connie
Intense Tropical Cyclone Connie was a strong tropical cyclone that affected both Mauritius and Réunion in late January 2000. On January 24, 2000, a tropical disturbance developed well east of Madagascar. Despite moderate wind shear, it gradually strengthened while stalling offshore, and late on January 25, was believed to have attained tropical storm status. After turning generally southeast, Connie attained cyclone intensity on January 27. Rapid intensification ensued. Shortly after developing a well-defined eye, Connie attained peak intensity at 0000 UTC on January 28 as an intense tropical cyclone. 2000 Pacific Hurricane Season
The 2000 Pacific hurricane season was an above-average Pacific hurricane season, although most of the storms were weak and short-lived. There were few notable storms this year. Tropical storms Miriam, Norman, and Rosa all made landfall in Mexico with minimal impact. Hurricane Daniel briefly threatened the U.S. state of Hawaii while weakening. Hurricane Carlotta (2000), Hurricane Carlotta was the strongest storm of the year and the second-strongest June hurricane in recorded history. Carlotta killed 18 people when it sank a freighter. Accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) is a metric used to compare overall activity of tropical cyclones, utilizing the available records of windspeeds at six-hour intervals to synthesize storm duration and strength into a single index value. The ACE index may refer to a single storm or to groups of storms such as those within a particular month, a full season or combined seasons. It is calculated by summing the square of tropical cyclones' maximum sustained winds, as recorded every six hours, but only for windspeeds of at least tropical storm strength (≥ 34 kn; 63 km/h; 39 mph); the resulting figure is divided by 10,000 to place it on a more manageable scale. Typhoon Saomai (2000)
Typhoon Saomai, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Osang, was a long-tracked and intense tropical cyclone that brought flooding rainfall in Japan and the Korean Peninsula in early September 2000. The torrential precipitation in Japan was considered some of the worst in the past century. Payatas Landslide
The Payatas landslide was a garbage dump collapse at Payatas, Quezon City, Philippines, on July 10, 2000. A large pile of garbage first collapsed and then went up in flames which resulted in the destruction of about 100 houses. Background The residents near the Payatas dumpsite, specifically Lupang Pangako were moved to the area from other parts of Quezon City in the 1990s under then mayor Brigido Simon. Parts of Lupang Pangako then would be used for the dump, a "mountain of garbage" eventually piled up near the relocation site. Poor people often scavenge the Payatas dumpsite as a means of livelihood. Some of the garbage dumped on the site often combust spontaneously. Typhoon Kai-tak, also known in the Philippines as Typhoon Edeng, was a typhoon that formed in early July 2000 and brought severe impacts to the Philippines and Taiwan. Meteorological history On July 2, a low pressure area formed north west of the Philippines and became a tropical depression on July 3 and started to drift northward, becoming a storm on the 5th and a typhoon on the 6th.
