Chalai or Chalai bazaar is an old shopping area in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. History Chala was officially established towards the end of 18th century by Raja Kesavadas, Dewan of Travancore. The idea was to make Chalai bazar the central point for the supply of commodities to the Travancore kingdom. The Killi and Karamana rivers nearby was used to transport goods to the market. Mateer Memorial Church
CSI Mateer Memorial Church is a Protestant church located in Thiruvananthapuram, India. It moved under the Church of South India, when the Anglican church united with SIUC (South India United Church) a union of presbyterians and congregationalists to form CSI in 1947. It was built in December 1906. Early history The church's history started with the arrival of the Rev John Cox, the first London Missionary Society missionary in Thiruvananthapuram, in 1838. At this time local Protestants in Thiruvananthapuram worshipped in a church constructed by the Protestant Evangelical Trust in the 1830s. After Rev Cox resigned in 1861, he was succeeded by Rev Samuel Mateer, who led the church for 30 years and died in 1893. Kizhakke Kotta, also known by its English name East Fort, is a busy commercial street located at the heart of the central business district of Thiruvananthapuram city in Kerala. Since Thiruvananthapuram was the capital of the kingdom of Travancore, East Fort has been a commercial centre. It also has the city's main bus stand, multiple theatres and the famous Padmanabha Swamy Temple. History East Fort got its name from the eastern entrance to the fort built by the Kings of Travancore. Mahatma Gandhi Road is the most important north–south road in Thiruvananthapuram City situated in the state of Kerala, India.
