Tillsonburg is a town in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada with a population of 18,615 located about 50 kilometres southeast of London, on Highway 3 at the junction of Highway 19. History Prior to European settlement, the present site of Tillsonburg was home to Indigenous tribes. The Tillsonburg Village Site, a 14th century Iroquoian village, was excavated in 2001 and 2008, in the northwest corner of the town, and contained 15 longhouses. The area was settled in 1825 by George Tillson and other immigrants from Enfield, Massachusetts. A forge and sawmill were erected and roads built which led to the establishment of this small community, originally called Dereham Forge. The settlement was on the Big Otter Creek. In 1836 the village was renamed Tillsonburg in honour of its founder. It was also in this year that the main street, Broadway, was laid out to its full width. CJDL-FM (107.3 MHz, ''Country 107.3'') is a radio station licensed to Tillsonburg, Ontario. Owned by Rogers Radio, a division of Rogers Sports & Media, it broadcasts a country format. The station was established in 1955 as the AM station CKOT, before migrating to FM in 2007. It had been operated by the locally owned Tillsonburg Broadcasting Company until 2017, when it was sold to Rogers Media. History The station was originally licensed on April 26, 1955, and began broadcasts four days later at 1510 AM. The station was owned by John B. Tillsonburg Airport
Tillsonburg Regional Airport is located north of Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada. The Tillsonburg Regional Airport was built during World War II as the secondary relief field, or R2, for Royal Canadian Air Force No. 14 Service Flying Training School in Aylmer, Ontario, part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, and was purchased by the Town of Tillsonburg in 1970. The airport is a general aviation facility home to several organizations and businesses. Ontario Highway 19
King's Highway 19, commonly referred to as Highway 19, is a provincially maintained highway in the Canadian province of Ontario, connecting Highway 3 in Tillsonburg with Highway 401 southeast of Ingersoll. The highway began as the Plank and Gravel Road, a toll road formed by the Ingersoll and Port Burwell Road Company. It was first assigned in 1930. Several extensions in the early 1930s took the route north to Highway 86 at Tralee. However, a significant amount of Highway 19 was decommissioned and turned over to local and county governments in 1997 and 1998. Route description The southern end of Highway 19 begins at Highway 3 in Tillsonburg, while the northern end terminates 400 metres north of the centreline of Highway 401, southeast of the Ingersoll town limits. George Tillson
George E. Tillson was an industrialist best known for founding the town of Tillsonburg. Tillson was born on November 25, 1782, in Enfield, Massachusetts. In 1808 he married Nancy Barker. Tillson moved to Upper Canada in 1822, and founded a small iron forge within Norfolk County with Hiram Capron and James and Benjamin Van Norman. In 1825 Tillson bought approximately 600 acres of land in the south-end of Oxford County along the Big Otter Creek using the funds earned from the forge. Tillson constructed a sawmill, lock, blast furnace and another iron forge in the area. Originally called the “Dereham Forge", the town was renamed ‘Tillsonburg’ in 1837 after its founder. King's Highway 3, commonly referred to as Highway 3, is a provincially maintained highway in the Canadian province of Ontario which travels parallel to the northern shoreline of Lake Erie. It has three segments, the first of which travels from the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor to Highway 77 in Leamington. The second portion begins at Talbotville Royal outside of St. Thomas at Highway 4, and travels to the western city limits of Port Colborne. The road is regionally maintained within Port Colborne as Niagara Regional Road 3, but regains its provincial designation at Highway 140. Big Otter Creek (alternately Otter River, Big Creek) is a waterway that empties into Lake Erie at Port Burwell, Ontario. It is long, and the area of its drainage basin is .
