Tillamook Burn
The Tillamook Burn was a series of forest fires in the Northern Oregon Coast Range of Oregon in the United States that destroyed a total area of of old growth timber in what is now known as the Tillamook State Forest. There were four wildfires in this series, which spanned the years of 1933–1958. By association, the name Tillamook Burn also refers to the location of these fires. This event is an important part of Oregon's history. First fire (1933) The first fire started in a ravine at the headwaters of Gales Creek on August 14, 1933. The exact cause of the first fire is unknown; however, the common narrative states that as logging crews were wrapping up operations early due to fire hazard restrictions, a steel cable dragging a fallen Douglas fir rubbed against the dry bark of a wind-fallen snag. Consolidated Timber Company
Consolidated Timber Company was an American lumber company that operated a large sawmill near Glenwood, Washington County, Oregon, Glenwood, Oregon, circa 1936–1946. History The Consolidated Timber Company was formed in response to the need to salvage the massive amount of lumber remaining after the initial Tillamook Burn fire in 1933. This would eventually end up being the largest salvage operation in American history. The original large fire was thought to have been caused by the operation of one of the original smaller companies that were located here. Access to the woods was difficult at the time as the original Astoria Military road had gone unmaintained and the Wilson River Highway had not been constructed yet. The original Wilson River road had fallen into disuse due to collapsed bridges and lack of funding.
