Thorius
''Thorius'', also known as minute salamanders, pigmy salamanders, or Mexican pigmy salamanders, is a genus of salamanders in the family Plethodontidae. They are endemic to Mexico and found in southern Veracruz and Puebla to Guerrero and Oaxaca. ''Thorius'' is the most species-rich tropical salamander genus relative to its distribution area ('' Bolitoglossa'' and '' Pseudoeurycea'' have many more species but also much wider distribution areas). It is not uncommon for two or even three species to occur in the same place. In such cases, species have diverged in terms of body size and dentition, apparently facilitating niche differentiation. The members of this genus are characterized by a small body — some species are less than in snout–vent length (tail roughly doubles the total body length). Their extreme miniaturization is accompanied by determinate growth and skeletal reduction. Their skeleton also shows unique features, such as ossification Ossification (also called ...

Thorius Aureus
''Thorius aureus'', the golden thorius, is a species of salamander in the genus ''Thorius'', the Mexican pigmy salamanders, part of the lungless salamander family. It is endemic to mountainous areas of north central Oaxaca State in Mexico. It is one of the largest ''Thorius'' species. Etymology The specific name ''aureus'', Latin for golden or splendid, refers to the distinctive golden dorsal stripe that is characteristic of the species. Description ''Thorius aureus'' is a slender salamander with a narrow head and long tail. However, among ''Thorius'' it counts as a large and robust species, with males measuring and females in snout–vent length. The tail is relatively long and can be up to 1.16 times the snout–vent length in males. It grows to a total length of about and is one of the largest species in the genus. Females have a rounded snout but this is more pointed in males. The eyes are protuberant and the nasolabial grooves distinct. The nostrils are small and oval a ...

Thorius Arboreus
''Thorius arboreus'', commonly known as the arboreal minute salamander, is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It is endemic to Sierra Juárez, Oaxaca, Mexico. The specific name ''arboreus'', derives from the Latin word ''arbor'', meaning tree, referring to the arboreal habitat of this species. Description With males measuring and females in snout–vent length, it is a very small species even among the generally small ''Thorius''. It has a slender habitus. The head is relatively wide; the snout is bluntly pointed. The eyes are relatively large. Maxillary teeth are lacking. The limbs are relatively long. There is a reddish dorsal stripe; some individuals have an ornate pattern where the dorsolateral margins of the stripe are "pinched" over the shoulders. Habitat and conservation Its natural habitat is cloud forest. It is an arboreal species typically occurring in the leaf axils of bromeliads. It tolerates some habitat degradation provided that shade remains. ...

Thorius Narismagnus
''Thorius narismagnus'' is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It is endemic to the San Martin Tuxtla volcano, in the Sierra de los Tuxtlas range in southern Veracruz state, Mexico. Its common name is San Martin pigmy salamander. Natural habitats of ''Thorius narismagnus'' are lowland and intermediate tropical forests. It occurs under rotten logs and among leaf-litter, and especially under fallen bromeliads. This species had not been seen since 1970s, until it was rediscovered in 2012. It has suffered from habitat loss Habitat destruction (also termed habitat loss or habitat reduction) occurs when a natural habitat is no longer able to support its native species. The organisms once living there have either moved elsewhere, or are dead, leading to a decrease ..., but this might not suffice to explain the disappearance of this species. Thorius Dubitus
''Thorius dubitus'', commonly known as the Acultzingo pigmy salamander, is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It is endemic to Mexico where it is found in the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca of west-central Veracruz and adjacent Puebla. ''Thorius dubitus'' is an exclusively terrestrial species. Its natural habitats are pine-oak cloud forests. It occurs under wood chips, logs, and rocks, and under the bark of logs and inside logs. It is threatened by habitat loss caused by logging, livestock, and subsistence agriculture Subsistence agriculture occurs when farmers grow crops on smallholdings to meet the needs of themselves and their families. Subsistence agriculturalists target farm output for survival and for mostly local requirements. Planting decisions occu .... It is endemic to the Caribbean slopes of the Sierra de Juarez and Sierra Mazateca, Oaxaca, Mexico. Description The holotype of ''Thorius adelos'' (an adult male) measures in snout–vent length and has a long tail. The dorsum and tail are brown. There is a dorsal, cream-coloured stripe on both sides. The snout is blunt with slightly upward-tilted nostrils. Habitat and conservation ''Thorius adelos'' is a very rare species only found in undisturbed cloud forests at elevations of above sea level. It is found in bromeliads and other epiphytic plants and in leaf-litter.
