Theatre In Australia
Theatre of Australia refers to the history of the live performing arts in Australia: performed, written or produced by Australians. There are theatrical and dramatic aspects to Indigenous Australian ceremonies such as the Corroboree, which go back more than 30,000 years. After British settlement in 1788, Australian theatrical arts became linked to the traditions of English literature and to British and Irish theatre. Australian literature and theatrical artists (including Aboriginal as well as multicultural immigrant Australians) have more recently introduced the culture of Australia and the character of a new continent to the world stage. Like many other spheres of activity, the performing arts have been organised differently in different States. Robin Lovejoy
Robin Casper Lovejoy, OBE (17 December 1924 – 14 December 1985) was an Australian director, actor, and designer best known for his work on television and in theatre. He was one of Australia's leading theatre directors of the 1960s and 1970s and significantly influenced the Australian drama and theatre stage. Early life Lovejoy was born on 17 December 1924 in Labasa, Fiji. His father, Casper Ebenezer Lovejoy (1886–1971) had English and Irish ancestry, and his mother Viti Clarke (1887–1951) had predominantly Scottish ancestry. During his younger years, he spent time at Suva Boys Grammar School, until his whole family moved from Fiji to Sydney, Australia in 1939. Shortly after, he began to work as an accountant. Ron Haddrick
Ronald Norman Haddrick (9 April 1929 – 11 February 2020) was an Australian actor, narrator and South Australian cricketer. In 2012, he received the Actors Equity Lifetime Achievement Award for his long and distinguished career in media, spanning some seventy years both locally and also in Britain. He appeared in many Shakespearean roles and often performed with theatre actress Ruth Cracknell. At the time of this Lifetime Achievement Award, playwright David Williamson said, "Ron Haddrick was chosen for two reasons. Gordon Maitland Chater AM (6 April 1922 – 12 December 1999) was an English Australian comedian and actor, and recipient of the Gold Logie, he appeared in revue, theatre, radio, television and film, with a career spanning almost 50 years. Biography Early life and career Chater was born in Bayswater, West London and attended Cottesmore School as a child, his mother was born in Shanghai. He attended Cambridge University to study medicine but did not finish his degree, instead taking part in many student revues. Ruth Cracknell
Ruth Winifred Cracknell AM (6 July 1925 – 13 May 2002) was an Australian character and comic actress, comedian and author. Her career encompassed all genres, including radio, theatre, television, and film. She appeared in many dramatic as well as comedy roles throughout a career spanning some 56 years. In theatre she was well known for her Shakespearean roles. Early life and education Ruth Winifred Cracknell was born on 6 July 1925 in Maitland, New South Wales to Charles and Winifred Goddard (nee Watts). John McCallum (actor)
John Neil McCallum (14 March 19183 February 2010) was an Australian theatre and film actor, highly successful in the United Kingdom. He was also a television producer. Early life McCallum's father, John Neil McCallum Sr., was a theatre owner and entrepreneur, who built and for many years ran the 2,000 seat Cremorne Theatre on the banks of the Brisbane River. After emigrating from Scotland, McCallum Snr. became an accomplished musician and was soon heavily involved in Brisbane's entertainment scene. Francis William Thring IV (11 May 1926 – 29 December 1994) was an Australian character actor in radio, stage, television and film; as well as a theatre director. Simon Phillips (born 1958) is a New Zealand-Australian director of theatre, musicals and opera. He is a former Artistic Director of Melbourne Theatre Company. Phillips graduated from Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School in 1980 with a Diploma in Acting. Aubrey Mellor
Aubrey Mellor is an Australian theatre director, dramaturge and teacher. Mellor has had a multi-disciplinary practice, having also worked as a writer, adapter, set designer, translator, producer, and stage manager. Early life and training Brought up around variety and circus, Mellor trained in many fields as a young man. His experience traversed dance, music and visual art. He went on to graduate from a production course at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NDIA) in Sydney in 1969. In 1972 Mellor was awarded a Churchill Fellowship. This experience allowed Mellor to study the traditional theatre of the East with a view to incorporating principles observed in Japan where appropriate into the Australian theatre techniques. Carrillo Baillieu Gantner is an American-Australian cultural leader and philanthropist, noted for his work in the state of Victoria. He is a member of the Melbourne retailing Myer family. Early life Carrillo was born in San Francisco, California, the son of Neilma Gantner with philanthropist and author Vallejo Gantner, and grandson of Merlyn Myer and Sidney Myer, founder of the Myer retail chain.
