Union College, Tellippalai
Union College ( ''Aikkiya Kallūri''; UC) is a provincial school in Tellippalai, Sri Lanka. Founded in 1816 by American Ceylon Mission, it is one of Sri Lanka's oldest schools. History Rev. Samuel Newell, an American missionary of American Ceylon Mission from New England, USA, arrived in Jaffna peninsula on 7 September 1813 and occupied the Dutch Hall in the Town of Tellippalai. Later, American missionaries including Rev. Daniel Poor and Rev. Edward Warren joined Newell. The American Ceylon Mission, founded in Jaffna District by the pioneer missionaries began establishing numerous Christian schools in the Jaffna peninsula in 1816. Their intention was to spread the Christian message among the Jaffna community. Rev. Daniel Poor established the first school on 9 December 1816 in the town of Tellippalai, sixteen kilometers from the City of Jaffna. Tellippalai Hospital
Tellippalai Hospital is a government hospital in Tellippalai, Sri Lanka. It is controlled by the provincial government in Jaffna. As of 2010 it had 102 beds. The hospital is sometimes called Tellippalai Base Hospital or Tellippalai District Hospital. As well as general medical care the hospital provides a wide variety of healthcare services including diabetic, dentistry, family planning, obstetrics (ante-natal), oncology, paediatrics, psychiatry and tuberculosis. The hospital also has an emergency department, a physiotherapy unit and a pathological laboratory. In 2010 the hospital had 7,201 in-patient admissions, 57,202 out-patient visits and 36,613 clinic visits. Daniel Poor
Daniel Poor (27 June 1789 – 3 February 1855) was an American Presbyterian missionary and educator, and the founder of the first English School in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Poor was born in Danvers, Massachusetts, Danvers, Massachusetts, United States. He graduated at Phillips Academy, Andover in 1805 and Dartmouth in 1811, and at Andover Theological Seminary in 1814 at the age of twenty-five. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Church at Newburyport, Massachusetts in June 1815. He married Susan Bulfinch of Salem, Massachusetts on October 9, 1815 and two weeks after their wedding left for Ceylon on October 23, 1815. He visited with Rev. William Bentley of Salem, a great linguist, who was not impressed with Poor's intentions or abilities. Varuthalaivilan
Varuthalaivilan (Varuththalaivilan or Varuthalaivillan) () is a small town or village in the northern Jaffna District of Sri Lanka. It is situated along the Vallai–Tellippalai-Arali road between Tellippalai and Kadduvan. The Varuththalaivilan village Grama Sevaka (GS) division J/241 is located in the Valikamam North Division. The village is close to the Palaly Military Base adjoining Jaffna Airport at Palaly. During the Sri Lankan Civil War, since 1990 the village has come under the high security zone and in 1990 the village was completely evacuated by the army. The inhabitants were permitted to return to some areas in April 2015. History The village has a traceable history of about 300 years. Tellippalai Railway Station
Tellippalai railway station ( ''Tellippaḻai toṭaruntu nilaiyam'') is a railway station in the town of Tellippalai in northern Sri Lanka. Owned by Sri Lanka Railways, the state-owned railway operator, the station is part of the Northern Line which links the north with the capital Colombo. The station was not functioning between 1990 and 2015 due to the civil war. The Northern Line between Jaffna and Kankesanthurai was re-opened on 2 January 2015. Mahajana College ( ''Makājaṉāk Kallūri'') is a provincial school in Tellippalai, Sri Lanka. History The school was founded in October 1910 by scholar and poet T. A. Thuraiyappapillai. Mahajana English High School is founded by Pavalar T. A. Thuraiappahpillai in 1910. 1949 - Raised to Grade I school 1961 - College is raised to Super Grade status. 1962 - The college is vested in the Crown as from 1 February and becomes a Government Institution for all intents and purposes. 1976 - Mr. P. Kanagasabapathy becomes the Principanl 1976 Oct - Former Principal Mr. T.T. Samuel Newell
Samuel Newell (1784–1821) was an American missionary and one of the pioneers of Americans, American foreign missions. He served with the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in India and Ceylon, where he founded the first American ''Ceylon Mission'' station. Biography The youngest of nine children, Newell was born to Ebenezer and Catherine Newell on 24 July 1784 in Durham, Maine, Durham, Maine. He lost his mother when he was three, and his father when he was fourteen years old. At the age of fourteen Newell went to Portland, Maine, Portland, and on sight-seeing tour he accepted an offer of a captain of a vessel that lay in the harbor; consequently, he moved to Boston. Maviddapuram () is a village in the Sri Lankan district of Jaffna under the Tellippalai divisional secretariat. Etymology The name Maviddapuram is derived , ''vidda'' (removed) . History According to legend Maviddapuram has had a Hindu shrine for 5,000 years. According to another legend, an 8th-century Chola princess Mathurapuraveeravalli, daughter of Tissai Ughra Cholan, the King of Madurai, was inflicted with a persistent intestinal disorder as well as facial disfigurement which made her face look like a horse. She was advised by a priest/sage to bathe in the freshwater spring at Keerimalai. After bathing in the spring Mathurapuraveeravalli's illness and disfigurement vanished. In gratitude, she renovated a Hindu shrine, located in Kovil Kadavai about two kilometers south east of the spring, into a full temple honouring the Hindu god Murugan (Skanda). Manipay
Manipay or Maanippaai () is a town in the northern Jaffna District of Sri Lanka. The original name of Manipay is Periyapulam. It was a mission location when the American Ceylon Mission (ACM) came to Sri Lanka in the 19th century. Dr. Samuel Fisk Green founded the Green Memorial Hospital in 1864 in this village. It was also known as ''Manipai''. There are number of schools in the village, some of which were founded by ACM. The 104-year-old Manipay Hindu College and the 53-year-old Manipay Hindu Ladies College, both High Schools, are prominent. The village also contains Hindu temples and churches. The Manipay Maruthady Pillaiyar Temple stands out.
