Television services in the North African nation of Algeria commenced in 1956, when the country was a department of France, under French broadcaster RTF. Shortly after independence, both television and radio were taken over by Algerian Radio and Television (''Radiodiffusion-Télévision Algérienne''; RTA). Since then, television began to expand throughout Algeria, with more than 53,000 television sets in use in the country as of 1963, a year after independence. Algeria is one of the first countries in Africa to publicly introduce television. The country was served with only one television channel, Télévision Algérienne, until 1994, the year when the French-language Canal Algérie was launched, also serving Algerian audiences residing in Europe and North America. Ennahar TV
Ennahar TV () is an Arabic satellite television channel broadcasting from Bir Mourad Rais. Ennahar TV was set up by Ennahar Group and a number of Arab intellectuals from Algeria and the rest of the Arab world. History Ennahar TV started broadcasting in test mode on 6 March 2012 using Nilesat from Amman. It opened its programming by broadcasting TV news by the duo of Riyadh Benamar and Nour El Yakin Meghriche. In April 2013, the Ministry of Communication confirmed the approval of Ennahar TV, along with Echourouk TV and El Djazairia. This administrative authorization was provisional and only valid until 31 December 2013. On 5 July 2013, Ennahar Documentaries, a sister channel of Ennahar TV, was launched on Nilesat to broadcast reports and documentaries from the Ennahar TV catalogue continuously. Internet use in Algeria increased from 150,000 users in 2006 to approximately 18,583,000 in 2015, with a penetration rate of 46% of the population, In 2008, the government set aside €100 million to provide internet to every high school in the country. The country is also modernising its internet network by installing optical fiber cables, and multi-service access nodes (MSANs) all across the country.
